Tank Investigation of the EDO Model 142 Hydro-Ski Research Airplane

Description: A tank investigation has been conducted of a 1/10-size powered-dynamic model of the Edo model 142 hydra-ski research airplane. The results of tests of two configurations are presented: One included a large ski and a ski well; the other, a small ski without a well. Water take-offs would be possible with the available thrust for either configuration: however, the configuration with the large ski emerged sooner and had less resistance from ski emergence until take-off. Longitudinal stability and landing behavior in smooth water were satisfactory for both configurations. Some alteration to the design of the tail would be desirable in order to reduce the spray loads.

Tank Investigation of the Grumman JRF-5 Airplane Equipped with Twin Hydro-Skis TED No. NACA DE 357

Description: A tank investigation has been conducted on a 1/8-size powered dynamic model of the Grumman JRF-5 airplane equipped with twin hydro-skis. The results of tests using two types of skis are presented: one had vertical sides joining the top surface to the chine; the other had the top surface faired to the chine to eliminate the vertical sides. Both configurations had satisfactory longitudinal stability although the model had a slightly greater stable elevator range available when the skis without the vertical sides were attached. Free model tests indicated no instability present when one ski emerged before the other. Considerable excess thrust was available at all speeds with either type of skis. A hump gross load-resistance ratio of 3.37 was obtained with the skis with the vertical sides and 3.53 with the other skis. Landing behavior in smooth water with yaw up to 15deg and roll up to 15deg in opposite directions was satisfactory with either type of skis.

Description: A tank investigation was made of the hydrodynamic characteristics of a 1/13.33-scale jet-powered dynamic model of the 160,000-pound Martin XP6M-1 flying boat. Longitudinal stability during take-off and landing, resistance of the complete model, spray characteristics, flap loads, and effect of sinking speed in smooth and rough water are presented, as well as behavior during taxiing, take-off and landing in rough water. The effect on spray of two bows and several bow-spray-strip modifications and the effect on resistance of afterbody chine strips also are presented.

Tectonic Map of Eastern Montana Showing the Distribution of Uranium Deposits

Description: From introduction: A tectonic map for the northern part of the Cordilleran Foreland was compiled to aid in establishing the geologic setting of uranium deposits within the region, and to determine what relationships, if any, exist between the distribution of uranium deposits and localities, and the regional tectonic pattern (Osterwald, 1955). The relationships might suggest new areas favorable for the discovery of uranium deposits in the Cordilleran Foreland as well as in other areas with similar tectonic history. The map will show the distribution of crest lines and troughs of folds, faults, uranium deposits and localities, and areas of volcanic activity. Outcrop areas of Precambrian and post-Eocene rocks are shown to designate the relative age of structures. Where possible the Precambrian rocks are subdivided into structural types, so that their influence on younger deformations may be inferred. The map of eastern Montana is one of a series being prepared before the final map is assembled (fig. 1.).

Description: From introduction: The compilation of the tectonic map of northern Colorado and northeastern Utah (area h, fig. 2) was done by the U. S. Geological Survey on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. Structures shown on the map have been obtained from published geologic maps, and from unpublished data supplied by government agencies, private companies, and independent geologists. The various structures of the Foreland can be divided into three large classes to show the relation of uranium deposits to the structural pattern.

Description: From introduction: The Cordilleran Foreland (King. 1951, p. 58-62; Horberg and others, 1949, p. 192194) forms a broad north-south belt, parallel to and east of the Cordilleran geanticline (fig. 1), in which the predominant geologic structure is a series of anticlinal mountains and broad asymmetric basins that contrast sharply with the folds and overthrusts related to the Cordilleran geanticline. A tectonic map of most of the Cordilleran Foreland (fig. 2) is being compiled as an aid to study the geologic setting of uranium deposits within the region, and to determine what relationships may exist between the distribution of uranium deposits and the regional tectonic pattern (Osterwald, 1955). Structures shown on the map have been obtained from published geologic maps and from unpublished data supplied by Government agencies, private companies, and independent geologists. The tectonic map of Wyoming east of the overthrust belt is only a progress report; any suggestions for corrections or additions will be appreciated.
