Qualitative and Quantitative Aspects of Crude Oil Composition

Description: Report issued by the Bureau of Mines over studies conducted on the composition of crude oil. As stated in the abstract, "this publication summarizes the literature on the composition of petroleum, with special emphasis on naphtha and gas oil, and provides a source book for the known qualitative and quantitative facts on crude oil composition" (p. 1). This report includes tables, and illustrations.

Qualitative Results from a Flight Investigation to Determine Aileron Effectiveness of Two Rocket-Propelled 1/20-Scale Models of the MX -76 Missile

Description: Free-flight tests of two rocket-propelled l/20-scale models of the Bell MX-776 missile have been conducted to obtain measurements of the aileron deflection required to counteract the induced rolling moments caused by combined angles of attack and sideslip and thus to determine whether the ailerons provided were capable of controlling the model at the attitudes produced by the test conditions. Inability to obtain reasonably steady-state conditions and superimposed high-frequency oscillations in the data precluded any detailed analysis of the results obtained from the tests. For these reasons, the data presented are limited largely to qualitative results.

Qualitative simulator study of longitudinal stick forces and displacements desirable during tracking

Description: In this study in which an airplane simulator with one degree of freedom (pitch) was used, results were determined for three conditions of airplane dynamics. For an undamped natural frequency of 1/2 cps with a damping ratio of 0.18 and for an undamped natural frequency of 1 cps with a damping ratio of 0.11, moderate longitudinal stick forces and displacements were desired.

The Quantitative Techniques of Scintillation Spectrometry as Applied to the Calibration of Standard Sources

Description: Report presenting "the determination of absolute gamma emission rates for monoenergetic gamma emitters using a single-channel scintillation spectrometer. Examples are given for Cr⁵¹, Cs¹³⁷, Nb⁹⁵, and Zn⁶⁵. Sources of error are discussed and steps being taken to improve the accuracy of the method are described" (p. 1).

Quantitative treatment of the creep of metals by dislocation and rate-process theories

Description: An equation for the steady-state rate of creep has been derived by applying the theory of dislocations to the creep of pure metals. The form of this equation is in agreement with empirical equations describing creep rates. The theory was also used to predict the dependence of steady-state rate of creep on physical constants of the material and good agreement was obtained with data in the literature for pure annealed metals. The rate of creep was found to decrease with increasing modulus of rigidity. This relation suggest that one of the requirements for a heat-resisting alloy is that its matrix be a metal that has a high modulus of rigidity and therefore a high modulus of elasticity.
