Preliminary Investigation of a Ceramic Lining for a Combustion Chamber for Gas-Turbine Use

Description: Combustion chamber liners for gas turbines and experimental set-ups were tested for failure. A ceramic-lined test chamber was operated at fuel/air ratios up to 0.050. Thermal-shock evaluation indicated that a ceramic lining, which expands after firing, would crack but would not fall apart during operation. Refractoriness of the lining and the resistance to mechanical shock were adequate. In general, shell temperature reductions of approximately 400 deg F were effected by the use of this lining at fuel/air ratios of 0.016 and 0.050. The mechanism of failure of the ceramic lining was induced by sudden heating and cooling during operation.

Preliminary investigation of a conical spike inlet in combination with a vertical-wedge auxiliary inlet at Mach number 1.9

Description: Pressure-recovery characteristics of a nacelle-type-spike inlet in combination with a vertical-wedge auxiliary scoop are presented for a free-stream Mach number of 1.9 at zero angle of attack. The auxiliary scoop provided 17 percent additional air flow with a drop in critical pressure recovery from 0.86 to 0.81. However, in terms of inlet-engine matching, the pressure recovery of the undersized spike inlet operating at a specified corrected air flow increased with the scoop open, for example, from 0.69 to 0.81.

A preliminary investigation of a new method for testing aerofoils in free flight

Description: This report is a description of a new method of testing aerofoils in free flight devised by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. The method consists in lowering below a flying airplane a large inverted aerofoil on three small steel wires in such a way that the lift on the aerofoil always keeps the wires tight. The resultant force is measured by the tension in the wires, and the direction of the resultant by the amount the wing trails backwards. A test was made on an aerofoil of the N.A.C.A. #64 section, 6 ft. in span and the results are compared with a similar section tested in the wind tunnel. This investigation indicates that by the use of suitable recording apparatus aerofoils may be accurately and conveniently tested at a Reynolds number, a velocity and a degree of turbulence, comparable with that on the full-sized airplane. Satisfactory experiments were also made in trailing a sphere and a streamlined body on single wires.

Preliminary Investigation of a New Type of Supersonic Inlet

Description: A supersonic inlet with supersonic deceleration of the flow entirely outside of the inlet is considered. A particular arrangement with fixed geometry having a central body with a circular annular intake is analyzed, and it is shown theoretically that this arrangement gives high pressure recovery for a large range of Mach number and mass flow and therefore is practical for use on supersonic airplanes and missiles. For some Mach numbers the drag coefficient for this type of inlet is larger than the drag coefficient for the type of inlet with supersonic compression entirely inside, but the pressure recovery is larger for all flight conditions. The differences in drag can be eliminated for the design Mach number. Experimental results confirm the results of the theoretical analysis and show that pressure recoveries of 95 percent for Mach numbers of 1.33 and 1.52, 92 percent for a Mach number of 1.72, and 86 percent for a Mach number of 2.10 are possible, with the configurations considered. If the mass flow decreases, the total drag coefficient increases gradually and the pressure recovery does not change appreciably. The results of this work were first presented in a classified document issued in 1946.

Preliminary investigation of a translating cowl technique for improving take-off performance of a sharp-lip supersonic diffuser

Description: A preliminary investigation was conducted in quiescent air on a translating cowl technique for improving the take-off performance of a sharp-lip supersonic diffuser. The technique consists of cutting the cowling in a plane normal to its axis and then translating the forepart of the cowling in the forward direction. The leading edge of the fixed portion of the cowling is rounded. Appreciable improved inlet performance was obtained with a cowling translation corresponding to a gap of only 1/4 inlet radius.
