Comparison of the knock-limited performance of triptane with 23 other purified hydrocarbons

Description: From Summary: "The knock-limited performance of blends containing General Motors triptane in S reference fuel and in an S plus M base fuel was determined in 17.6, F-3, F-4, and full-scale (single cylinder) engines. The results obtained are presented and are compared with published data from similar tests of 12 aromatics, 10 paraffins (including highly purified triptane), and 2 olefins. The comparison of fuels - which is based on a consideration of (a) antiknock blending sensitivity, (b) lead susceptibility, (c) temperature sensitivity, and (d) comparison of small-scale and full-scale engine data - is presented by means of bar graphs."

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the cooling of a Franklin 6-AC-29S horizontally opposed cylinder air-cooled engine installed in a Fleetwings model 33 trainer. The cowling on the airplane did not provide satisfactory cooling, but several alterations were tested, including with cylinder baffles. Results regarding engine cooling, aerodynamics of the cowling installation, and predicted versus actual cowling performance are provided.

Effect of additions of aromatics on the knocking characteristics of several 100-octane fuels at two engine speeds

Description: Report presenting testing at two engine speeds on six representative fuels rated at 100-octane number by the C.F.R. aviation method. Blends of the fuels with benzene, toluene, xylene, and isopropyl comprise nine other fuels, leading to testing on 15 fuels. Results regarding the tests at 2000 rpm and 250 degrees Fahrenheit inlet-air temperature, at 3100 rpm and 250 degrees Fahrenheit inlet-air temperature, 2000 rpm and 150 degrees Fahrenheit inlet-air temperature, and 3100 rpm and 150 degrees Fahrenheit inlet-air temperature, effect of speed on knock rating, effect of inlet-air temperature on knock rating, and effect of spark advance on knock rating are provided.

Effect of Changes in Aileron Rigging on the Stick Forces of a High-Speed Fighter Airplane

Description: From Summary: "The effects of changes in aileron rigging between 2 deg up and 2 deg down on the stick forces were determined from wind-tunnel data for a finite-span wing model. These effects were investigated for ailerons deflecting equally in both directions and linearly with stick deflection. Data were analyzed for a Frise, a sealed internally balanced, and a beveled-trailing-edge aileron. The results of the analysis showed that only ailerons having linear hinge-moment characteristics are unaffected by changes in rigging and indicated that ailerons having decidedly nonlinear hinge-moment-coefficient curves, particularly for deflections near 0 deg, are very sensitive to changes in rigging."

The effect of compressibility on two-dimensional tunnel-wall interference for a symmetrical airfoil

Description: Summary: The effective change in the velocity of flow past a wing section, caused by the presence of wind-tunnel walls, is known for potential flow. This theory is extended by investigation of the two-dimensional compressible flow past a thin Rankine Oval. It is shown that for a symmetrical section at zero angle of attack the velocity increment due to the tunnel walls in the incompressible case must be multiplied by the factor 1/1-M^2 to take account of compressibility effects. The Mach number, M, corresponds to conditions in the wind-tunnel test section with the model removed (p. 1.).

The effect of internal pressure on the buckling stress of thin-walled circular cylinders under torsion

Description: The results of a series of tests to determine the effect of internal pressure on the buckling load of a thin cylinder under an applied torque indicated that internal pressure raises the shear buckling stress. Effect of powered propellers on the aerodynamic characteristics and the porpoising stability of a dynamic model of a long-range flying boat

Description: Report discusses the results of two tests: "1) aerodynamic tests to determine the effect of the slipstream and thrust from the powered propellers on the lift and trimming-moment characteristics, and 2) hydrodynamic tests to determine the effect of the powered propellers on the range of stable locations of the center of gravity (from Introduction)." Large differences in the stable range between half-thrust and full-thrust conditions were observed. Three effects of power were also involved in the location of the stable range of the center of gravity.
