Ion Replacement Program Annual Report: 1993

Description: Annual report of the Ion Replacement Electrorefining Program at Aronne National Laboratory describing their research and activities. There are three key accomplishments highlighted for the year: (1) identification of a suitable sodium(beta){double_prime}-alumina/molten salt electrolyte system that functions reproducibly at 723 K, (2) actual separation of dysprosium and lanthanum in experiments, and (3) the identification of a metal alloy, Li{sub x}Sb, as an alternative ion replacement electrode.

Comparison of Cast-in-Place Concrete Versus Precast Concrete Stay-in-Place Forming Systems for Lock Wall Rehabilitation

Description: "The objectives of this report are as follows: (a) To present the design and details utilized on the precast concrete panel rehabilitation at Troy Lock. (b) To compare the results of precast concrete panel rehabilitation with previous cast-in-place repairs, with respect to quality, cost, and schedule. (c) To recommend refinements in the details and methods of fabrication and erection of the precast panels, based on lessons learned from work performed at Troy Lock." (p. 2).

State-of-the-Art for Assessing Earthquake Hazards in the United States, Report 28: Recommended Accelerograms for Earthquake Ground Motions

Description: Abstract: "A catalog of recommended accelerograms and response spectra is provided to accompany all representative values for Richter magnitudes at distance determined peak horizontal accelerations-velocities-durations, hard and soft sites, shallow and deep earthquakes. Accelerograms are also recommended for corresponding Modified Mercalli intensities. The accelerograms are related to the Krinitzsky-Chang-Nuttli curves for magnitude and distance, and the Krinitzsky-Chang curves for MM intensity."

Beach and Borrow Site Sediment Investigation for a Beach Nourishment at Ocean City, Maryland

Description: Report describing the methodology used to sample and analyze sediment at Ocean City, Maryland as part of a beach nourishment project. During the project, sediment was moved from borrow sites to construct parts of the beach area; both the borrow sites and native beach were tested.

Engineering Design Guidance for Detached Breakwaters as Shoreline Stabilization Structures

Description: "The objectives of this report are to summarize and present the most recent functional and structural design guidance available for detached breakwaters, and provide examples of both prototype breakwater projects and the use of available tools to assist in breakwater design" (p. 11).

Rehabilitation of the South Jetty, Ocean City, Maryland

Description: Partial abstract: Frequent dredging requirements and scouring at the foundation of Ocean City Inlet's south jetty resulted in a study to determine the source of the shoaling and scouring. The study concluded that sand was being transported northward along Assateague Island, through and over the south jetty, and deposited inside the inlet. The sand was then transported north by ebb currents where it encroached on the Federal navigation channel. A rehabilitation program was initiated to create a littoral barrier to eliminate the shoaling problem and to repair the scour hold. Three headland breakwaters were constructed to stabilize Northern Assateague Island. The site was selected as part of the Monitoring Completed Coastal Projects (MCCP) Program to determine how well the rehabilitation project accomplished its design purpose.

[Evolution of Sedimentary Basins/Onshore Oil and Gas Investigations--Santa Maria Province: Chapters Y and Z]

Description: From abstract: A complex Neogene history characterizes the offshore Santa Maria basin and the northwest margin of the western Transverse Ranges, California. This history includes the transition from subduction to a transtensional and then transpressional plate boundary, including about 900 of clockwise rotation of the western Transverse Ranges. This report uses seismic reflection data to document the geometry of structures that accommodated this deformation and offshore well data to date and correlate the sediments which were affected by the different tectonic episodes.
