Ground effects on the longitudinal characteristics of two models with wings having low aspect ratio and pointed tips

Description: Wind-tunnel tests were conducted to determine the ground effects on a tailless model with a wing of aspect ratio 2 and infinite taper, and on a tailed model with a triangular wing of aspect ratio 3, with flaps. Control-surface hinge moments were measured on the tailless model. The results are compared with the predictions of the theory of Tani, et al.

Handbook of Structural Stability Part I: Buckling of Flat Plates

Description: The various factors governing buckling of flat plates are critically reviewed and the results are summarized in a comprehensive series of charts and tables. Numerical values are presented for buckling coefficients of flat plates with various boundary conditions and applied loadings. The effects of plasticity are incorporated in non dimensional buckling charts utilizing the three-parameter description of stress-strain curves.

Handbook of structural stability part II : buckling of composite elements

Description: The local buckling of stiffener sections and the buckling of plates with sturdy stiffeners are reviewed, and the results are summarized in charts and tables. Numerical values of buckling coefficients are presented for longitudinally compressed stiffener sections of various shapes, for stiffened plates loaded in longitudinal compression and in shear, and for stiffened cylinders loaded in torsion. Although the data presented consist primarily of elastic-buckling coefficients, the effects of plasticity are discussed for a few special cases. (author).

Mineralogy, Internal Structural and Textural Characteristics, and Paragenesis of Uranium-Bearing Veins in the United States

Description: From introduction: The purpose of this paper is to summarize and review some of the recent mineralogic information relevant to uranium-bearing veins in the United States, as well as to describe some of the reported mineralogic associations and the modes of occurrence of the uranium minerals in vein deposits.

Reflection and Refraction of Acoustic Waves by a Shock Wave

Description: The presence of sound waves in one or the other of the fluid regions on either side of a shock wave is made apparent, in the region under superpressure, by acoustic waves (reflected or refracted according to whether the incident waves lie in the region of superpressure or of subpressure) and by thermal waves. The characteristics of these waves are calculated for a plane, progressive, and uniform incident wave. In the case of refraction, the refracted acoustic wave can, according to the incidence, be plane, progressive, and uniform or take the form of an 'accompanying wave' which remains attached to the front of the shock while sliding parallel to it. In all cases, geometrical constructions permit determination of the kinematic characteristics of the reflected or refractive acoustic waves. The dynamic relationships show that the amplitude of the reflected wave is always less than that of the incident wave. The amplitude of the refracted wave, whatever its type, may in certain cases be greater than that of the incident wave.

Report on the Possible Effects on the Surrounding Population of an Assumed Release of Fission Products into the Atmosphere from a 300 Megawatt Nuclear Reactor Located at Lagoona Beach, Michigan

Description: Report issued by the APDA over studies conducted on the release of radioactive particles near Lagoona Beach, Michigan in 1955. "The possible effects on the surrounding population of a release of fission products at the Lagoona Beach site" (p. 1) are discussed. This report includes tables, maps, and illustrations.
