Dynamic Testing of Airplane Shock-Absorbing Struts

Description: "Measurement of perpendicular impacts of a landing gear with different shock-absorbing struts against the drum testing stand. Tests were made with pneumatic shock absorbers having various degrees of damping, liquid shock absorbers, steel-spring shock absorbers and rigid struts. Falling tests and rolling tests. Maximum impact and gradual reduction of the impacts in number and time in the falling tests. Maximum impact and number of weaker impacts in rolling tests" (p. 1).

Turbulence and Mechanism of Resistance on Spheres and Cylinders

Description: The nature of turbulent flow through pipes and around obstacles is analyzed and illustrated by photographs of turbulence on screens and straighteners. It is shown that the reversal of flow and of the resistance law on spheres is not explainable by Prandtl's turbulence in the boundary layer. The investigation of the analogous phenomena on the cylinder yields a reversal of the total field of flow.

Resonance Vibrations of Aircraft Propellers

Description: On the basis of the consideration of various possible kinds of propeller vibrations, the resonance vibrations caused by unequal impacts of the propeller blades appear to be the most important. Their theoretical investigation is made by separate analysis of torsional and bending vibrations. This method is justified by the very great difference in the two natural frequencies of aircraft propeller blades. The calculated data are illustrated by practical examples.

Vertical Descent of the Autogiro

Description: The purpose of this report is to show that only part of the system of rotating blades really is in the "windmill decelerating attitude" when the profile drag is sufficiently low. This particular part receives more torque from the air loads than can be absorbed by the profile drag. As a result thereof the rotating autogiro blade, when its torque is zero, is in part a propeller which functions in the "annular vortex attitude.".

Increase in the Maximum Lift of an Airplane Wing Due to a Sudden Increase in Its Effective Angle of Attack Resulting From a Gust

Description: Wind-tunnel tests are described, in which the angle of attack of a wing model was suddenly increased (producing the effect of a vertical gust) and the resulting forces were measured.
