Tests of the Daimler D-IVa Engine at a High Altitude Test Bench

Description: Reports of tests of a Daimler IVa engine at the test-bench at Friedrichshafen, show that the decrease of power of that engine, at high altitudes, was established, and that the manner of its working when air is supplied at a certain pressure was explained. These tests were preparatory to the installation of compressors in giant aircraft for the purpose of maintaining constant power at high altitudes.

N.A.C.A. Recording Air Speed Meter

Description: A new type of air speed meter is described which was designed by the technical staff of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. The instrument consists essentially of a tight metal diaphragm of high natural period which is acted upon by the pressure difference of a pitot-static head. The resulting deflection of this diaphragm is recorded optically on a moving film.

Crippling Strength of Axially Loaded Rods

Description: A new empirical formula was developed that holds good for any length and any material of a rod, and agrees well with the results of extensive strength tests. To facilitate calculations, three tables are included, giving the crippling load for solid and hollow sectioned wooden rods of different thickness and length, as well as for steel tubes manufactured according to the standards of Army Air Services Inspection. Further, a graphical method of calculation of the breaking load is derived in whic… more

Influence of Struts and Stays on the Speed of an Airplane

Description: Report presenting an experiment in the Rechlin airdrome in the fall of 1918 to determine the influence of struts and stays on the speed of an airplane. Results indicated that only a slight increase in horizontal speed was shown in a stayless airplane, but it had considerably greater climbing speed.

Langley Field wind tunnel apparatus

Description: From Summary: "The difficulties experienced in properly holding thin tipped or tapered airfoils while testing on an N.P.L. type aerodynamic balance even at low air speeds, and the impossibility of holding even solid metal models at the high speeds attainable at the National Advisory Committee's wind tunnel, necessitated the design of a balance which would hold model airfoils of any thickness and at speeds up to 150 m.p.h. In addition to mechanical strength and rigidity, it was highly desirable … more

Some Remarks Concerning Soaring Flight

Description: The publication of the following details is due to the desire of the editor to have the problems of soaring flight treated on the occasion of the Rhone Soaring Flight Contest. Soaring flight is defined as motorless flight without loss of height. Some calculations are provided in order to maximize the potential effects of wind and air currents.

Tin Soldering of Aluminum and Its Alloys

Description: A method is presented for soldering aluminum to other metals. The method adopted consists of a galvanic application to the surface of the light-metal parts to be soldered, of a layer of another metal, which, without reacting electrolytically on the aluminum, adheres strongly to the surface to which it is applied, and is, on the other hand, adapted to receive the soft solder. The metal found to meet the criteria best was iron.

Treatment of the Tungsten Ores of Boulder County, Colo.

Description: Report discussing the the development of milling practice in Boulder County, the ore-dressing methods in use, and the local manufacture of ferrotungsten and tungstic oxide. Figures giving the production of tungsten concentrates in the Boulder district, in the United States, and in the world; data on the buying of tungsten ores; costs of production; and the normal tungsten requirements in this country are presented.

Computative examination of bending strength of girders originally curved and subjected to longitudinal compression

Description: This report examines the stipulation contained in the 1918 BLV, that a girder subjected to longitudinal compression under the influence of half of the specified breaking load, along with Euler bending safety with an initial deflection of 1/200 of the length of the girder can, at most, be subjected to half the stipulated breaking strength.

Deflection of Propeller Blades While Running

Description: "The forces acting on the blades of a propeller proceed from the mass of the propeller and the resistance of the surrounding medium. The magnitude, direction and point of application of the resultant to the propeller blade is of prime importance for the strength calculation. Since it was obviously impracticable to bring any kind of testing device near the revolving propeller, not so much on account of the element of danger as on account of the resulting considerable disturbance of the air flow,… more

The effect of longitudinal moment of inertia upon dynamic stability

Description: "Free flight tests were carried out to show whether the longitudinal oscillations of a standard S.E.5A airplane are noticeably affected if its longitudinal moment of inertia is increased. These oscillations were taken by means of a self-recording instrument, the airplane having first its ordinary moment of inertia and then one increased by 14 percent. The period of oscillation was slightly longer after the increase of the moment of inertia, but the damping was not affected" (p. 1).

Effect of Periodic Changes of Angle of Attack on Behavior of Airfoils

Description: This report presents the results of a series of experiments, which gave some quantitative results on the effect of periodic changes in the direction of the relative air flow against airfoils. The first series of experiments concerned how the angle of attack of the wing model was changed by causing the latter to oscillate about an axis parallel to the span and at right angles to the air flow. The second series embraced all the experiments in which the direction of the air flow itself was periodi… more

F-5-L boat seaplane: Comparative performance with direct and geared engines

Description: Comprehensive tests were made to compare the performance of the F-5-L Boat Seaplane fitted with direct drive and Liberty engines. Details are given on the test conditions. The conclusions of the comparison tests follow. 1) An F-5-L with geared engines takes off in approximately 90 percent of the time required for the same airplane with standard direct drive engines. An F-5-L with geared engines climbs in 20 minutes to an altitude approximately 20 percent greater than that obtained with the stan… more
