General and Engineering Geology of the Wray Area, Colorado and Nebraska

Description: From abstract: Most of the formations in the Wray area are fair foundation materials, although good construction materials are scarce. The gravel of the Grand Island formation and the gravels in the Ogallala formation contain large quantities of clay, silt, sand, and calcium carbonate, and have very few pebbles larger than one-half inch in diameter.

Tectonic Map of Western Nebraska and Northwestern Kansas Showing the Distribution of Uranium Occurrences

Description: From introduction: The Cordilleran Foreland (King. 1951, p. 58-62; Horberg and others, 1949, p. 192194) forms a broad north-south belt, parallel to and east of the Cordilleran geanticline (fig. 1), in which the predominant geologic structure is a series of anticlinal mountains and broad asymmetric basins that contrast sharply with the folds and overthrusts related to the Cordilleran geanticline. A tectonic map of most of the Cordilleran Foreland (fig. 2) is being compiled as an aid to study the geologic setting of uranium deposits within the region, and to determine what relationships may exist between the distribution of uranium deposits and the regional tectonic pattern (Osterwald, 1955). The map will show the distribution of faults, uranium deposits, areas of volcanic activity, and crestlines and troughs of folds.

Performance of Relief Wells Along Missouri River Levees: 1951-1952 Floods

Description: "The purpose of this report is to present the results of a study of the performance of the three relief well systems [along the Missouri River] during the July 1951 and April 1952 floods, and to compare their performance with design predictions. [...] The report includes observed uplift and well-flow data, descriptions of relief well operations during the floods, and an analysis of the effectiveness of the well systems together with discussion and comments on several experimental and test wells" (p. 2).

Geology of Franklin, Webster, and Nuckolls Counties, Nebraska

Description: The following report was prepared as part of a program of the Department of the Interior for the development of the Missouri River basin. The report focuses on the study of the geology of part of south-central Nebraska, with emphasis on the deposits of the Pleistocene age and their engineering characteristics.

Mineralogy and Stratigraphy of the Lower Part of the Pierre Shale, South Dakota and Nebraska

Description: From abstract and introduction: Mineralogic and stratigraphic studies of the lower part of the Pierre Shale of Late Cretaceous age along the Missouri River indicate correlations different from those generally accepted. The purposes of this paper are to present evidence for the new correlations and to resolve problems of formal nomenclature that result from them.

Preliminary Digital Model of Ground-Water Flow in the Madison Group, Powder River Basin and Adjacent Areas, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska

Description: Abstract: A digital simulation model was used to analyze regional ground-water flow in the Madison Group aquifer in the Powder River Basin and adjacent areas. Most recharge to the aquifer originates in or near the outcrop areas of the Madison in the Bighorn Mountains and Black Hills , and most discharge occurs through springs and wells. Results from the model calculations indicate that the total flow through the aquifer in the modeled areas was approximately 200 cubic feet per second (5.7 cubic metres per second). The aquifer can probably sustain increased ground-water withdrawals probably would significantly lower the potentiometric surface in the Madison aquifer in a large part of the basin. The digital model could better predict the effects of withdrawals if more accurate estimates of the storage coefficient, transmissivity, and leakance could be obtained.
