Occurrence of Technetium in Nature : Final Report for the Period November 1, 1954 to August 31, 1955

Description: Twelve neutron activation analyses for naturally occurring technetium-98 were performed. Positive results were obtained in ten cases. Precautions were taken to avoid interference by molybdenum and technetium-99. the cross section for the reaction [formula] as found to be equal to 4 +- 2 mb for the neutron spectrum of the vertical thimbles of the Argonne CP-5 reactor. Development of Forging Techniques for Uranium

Description: Uranium has been successfully forged using a Lobdell-Nazel forging hammer and a forging temperature range of 500 to 650 degrees centigrade. Using standard forging techniques, the metal readily flowed at the temperature chosen. A noticeable increase in tensile strength, yield strength and percent elongation was obtained in forged metal as compared with cast metal. The Effects of 250-kv X-Ray on the Dog's Pancreas: Morphological and Functional Changes

Description: Previous investigations that the pancreas is a radioresistant organ. Ivy in 1924 noted the presence of a fibrotic atrophic pancreas in a dog which had received one erythema dose to the epigastrium. Fisher in 1923 reported that four to five erythema doses delivered in a single application caused complete disappearance of the irradiated pancreatic remnant in about two months. Total Cross Sections for K Mesons and π Mesons on Protons and Deuterons between 2.5 and 6 BeV/c

Description: Recent measurements of the pion-proton total cross section, taken with small statistical errors, have shown the existence of two new maxima in the momentum range between 2 and 3 BeV/c. Measurements of comparable statistical accuracy, covering the momentum range from 2.5 to 8 BeV/c are reported in the present paper. Effects of Reactor Environment on Candidate PRTR Gas Loop Materials.

Description: The purpose of this program is to determine the effects of neutron radiation and reactor gaseous atmospheres on the structural integrity of candidate materials for the PRTR gas-cooled loop. An exploratory investigation is being conducted to select a high temperature resistant alloy for the fabrication of tubes and supporting appliances for the PRTR gas-cooled loop. In addition to a low neutron cross section, the material must be able to withstand the operating conditions outlined in Table 1.

Electrodecontamination of Stainless Steel

Description: Abstract: "In experimental studies, decontamination factors of 1000 to 3000 were obtained by electrostripping deposited radioactivity from stainless steel surfaces, used as the anode, in 2% sulfuric acid at current densities as low as 0.01 amp/in.-2. Stainless steel cathodes were used. The method was successfully applied to contaminated equipment."

Description: The index of refraction of PuO2 made by thermal decomposition of PU(C2O2, 6H2O gradually increases from a value < 1.9 to 2.40 as the decomposition temperature is increased from 150 degree to l000 degree C. This change in refractive index parallels a gradual change in the x-ray diffraction pattern from weak, diffuse lines for PuO2 ignited at 150° to sharp, well resolved lines for PuO2 ignited at 1000°C. Surface Structure of Pile Irradiated 2S Aluminum

Description: The surfaces of cold rolled, half hard, nitric acid treated, autoclave etched, 2S aluminum coupons were studied by optical and electronoscopic methods, before and after exposure to hot water alone and hot water and neutron bombardment.
