Reaction of Graphic with Sodium

Description: Most of the publications in the open literature available to us agree that sodium does not readily react with graphite, though potassium, rubidium, and cesium readily enter between the planes of the graphite lattice. In view of the conflicting evidence available, it seems inadvisable without very extensive further study to consider the use of graphite in direct contact with liquid sodium, except under very mild conditions of temperature and irradiation, and then only with very pure sodium and c… more

Liquid Metal Level Instrument

Description: Theory of operation and test results are given for a resistance type of liquid metal level instrument. The voltage across a steel rod in the tank is amplified by a magnetic amplifier and indicated by a milliammeter. Temperature compensation is provided for tank temperatures up to 1000 F.

Recovery of Uranium by Ion Exchange or by Uranous Phosphate Precipitation from Sulfuric Acid Leach Solutions Produced from Australian Davidite Ore Concentrates

Description: Uranium ore from Radium Hill, South Australia was leached with hot sulfuric acid solutions and the uranium recovered from solution by uranous phosphate precipitation or by use of anion exchange resins.

Preliminary Leaching Investigation of Ores From Radium Hill, South Australia

Description: Leaching tests indicated high recoveries could be obtained by use of large quantities of sulfuric acid and boiling for relatively long periods. Filtration rates were satisfactory but large settling areas would be required to wash and thicken before filtering.

Progress Report For November 16, 1951 - January 15, 1952

Description: This progress report describes the final tests on ore samples from the Belgian Congo. Leaching, precipitation and ion exchange testing was continued on ore samples and leach liquors from Radium Hill (South Australia), Temple Mountain, Lukachukai, and Rand. Test work on uranium recovery from residues remaining after HF production from Utah Fluorite ore samples was completed. Additional test results are also presented.

The Use of Radioactive Bromide and Chloride to Measure Extracellular Fluid

Description: During the last year we have been attempting to increase our understanding of the significance of the various dilution methods used to measure the extra-cellular fluid. When the dilution methods were first proposed to obtain a measure of the extracellular fluid volume, it was hoped that an agent could be found which would distribute uniformly and exclusively throughout this compartment, which would approach equilibrium rapidly, and which could be measured by simple and accurate procedures. We h… more

Pipet Filler

Description: A number of pipetting aids are commercially available which obviate the necessity of filling pipets by oral suction. Most of the commercially available devices involve fitting the pipet into a soft tight fitting bushing and filling by means of either a piston or a rubber bulb. The pipet is then emptied by means of a valve control which permits, it is claimed, a dispensing accuracy of 0.1mL. It is at once apparent that the probable error (10% for a 1 mL. pipet) is considerably greater than is pe… more

Microclimatology at Brookhaven

Description: The meteorological control program developed at Brookhaven National Laboratory requires some simple means of classifying atmospheric turbulence so that the dispersion of cooling air from the nuclear reactor may be measured and forecast on a routine basis. The first approach to the problem, was based on the variations of horizontal wind direction as measured by a standard Bendix-Friez Aerovane mounted 355 ft. above ground. The time interval used was one hour. The original system has proven satis… more

Determination of Cholesterol Digitonide with Anthrone

Description: A new colorimetric method for the determination of cholesterol has been investigated. It makes use of the relatively stable green color given by a purified digitonin precipitate with the anthrone reagent of Dreywood. Equal precision can be obtained with the new method using 1/10 or less of the quantity of material required for present colorimetric methods.

UCRL Lectures on Numerical Analysis and Applied Mathematics: Lecture IX

Description: The field of mathematics which deals with the construction of charts representing mathematical laws is known as Nomography. Often it is necessary to repeatedly solve mathematical formulae, but with different values for the symbols involved. The manipulation of the formulae, or repeated constructions of graphs, may require considerable work, as well as carry with it the possibility of errors invalidating the results. In such a situation, the construction of a single chart which would serve for a… more

Mathematical Theory of the Lethal Action of Radiation on Yeast Cells

Description: The main part of this thesis is devoted to the derivation and study of formulas for the probability of survival of the haploid and diploid yeast cell, based on models proposed by Zirkle and Tobias. Some properties of so-called completely monotonic functions are developed, and the results are applied to the investigation of some of the more complicated formulas. Finally the theoretical expressions are compared with the experimental data obtained by Tobias.

MTA, A-12 Development, Drift Tubes - RF and Beam Geometry. Comparison of A-12 to A-24

Description: The final r.f. characteristics of A-12 are shown. The mechanical features are available in UCRL-1859. If A-12 were to be changed to 24.2 mm rather than 12.1 mm, keeping the same length and the same constant average coil gradient of 0.375 MV/ft., the characteristics of such an A-24 can be obtained from the attached curves.

Three Lectures On Controlled Thermonuclear Power Production

Description: This report was written from the notes used by Dr. York in delivering his three lectures on considerations pertinent to the problem of utilizing controlled thermonuclear reactions for the production of power. The first lecture discussed fundamental properties of the DD and DT reactions and the reacting substances. The second lecture described the stellarator, a proposed machine for the controlled production of power from the above reactions. The third lecture described the pinch effect and cons… more
