Water Quality and Streamflow Characteristics, Raritan River Basin, New Jersey

Description: Abstract: The findings of a problem-oriented, river-system investigation of the water quality and streamflow characteristics of the Raritan River, N.J. are described. Information on streamflow duration, time-of-travel measurements, and analyses of chemical, biochemical and physical-water quality are summarized and used to define relations existing between water quality, streamflow, geology, and environmental development in the basin's hydrologic system. Stream quality, particularly in the lower urban areas of the basin, is shown to be deteriorating with time at most of the sampling sites reported. For example, average dissolved-oxygen concentration is reported to be undersaturated at all sampling sites and is decreasing with time at most sites. Biochemical-oxygen demand is increasing at most sites, as are the dissolved-solids content.

Impact of Suburban Residential Development on Water Resources in the Area of Winslow Township, Camden County, New Jersey

Description: Purpose and scope: The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of the development of Winslow Crossing on water resources., including the quantity and quality of streamflow, the quality of ground water, and water levels of the aquifer. Streamflow and water-quality data were collected for 7 years at four sites on the tributaries and the main stem of the Great Egg Harbor River. Water-quality data were also collected at an additional four surface-water sites. Water levels were recorded at four observation wells. These wells were sampled periodically for water-quality analysis. Samples were also taken from the main production well for Winslow Crossing.

Digital-Simulation and Projection of Head Changes in the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy Aquifer System, Coastal Plain, New Jersey

Description: From abstract: A digital model was used to simulate the response of the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system to pumping stresses during the 18-year period, 1956-73. The model was used to compute projected potentiometric heads and trends to the year 2000. Three sets of conditions were simulated: (1) no increase in ground-water extractions, (2) continued growth in ground-water extractions at the rate of 3 percent annually, and (3) continued growth in ground-water extractions at the rate of 3 percent annually, in conjunction with the activation of a freshwater head barrier in the fresh-salty water transition zone.

Investigation of Acidity and Other Water-Quality Characteristics of Upper Oyster Creek, Ocean County, New Jersey

Description: Water-quality data collected in the upper Oyster Creek drainage basin indicate that the stream has excellent water quality except for a persistently low pH. The mean concentrations of the major inorganic ions were all less than 6.0 mg/L. Mean concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were 0.15 mg/L and 0.01 mg/L, respectively. Dissolved oxygen averaged 8.7 mg/L and 81 percent saturation. Low pH levels are typical of streams draining cedar swamps. In Oyster Creek, the pH tended to decrease downstream due to chemical and biological processes. The pH levels in swamps were one-half unit or more lower than the pH levels in the adjacent stream. Sharp declines in stream pH were noted during runoff periods as the result of the mixing of poorly-buffered stream water with more highly acidic water from surrounding swamp areas. The quality of ground water within the study area was similar to the quality of stream flow, except for higher iron and ammonia-nitrogen concentrations and a higher pH range of 4.9-6.5. Precipitation represented a major source of many chemical constituents in the ground- and surface-waters of Oyster Creek basin.

Nitrification in Four Acidic Streams in Southern New Jersey

Description: Abstract: Chemical and microbiological data from four characteristically acidic streams in southern New Jersey were used to evaluate seven factors related to the proclivity of each stream to nitrify under the influence of secondary sewage effluent. pH, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen were used as indicators of a stream conditions while neutralization of alkalinity, nitrogen species trends, BOD/NOD incubations, and nitrifying bacteria densities served as actual nitrification indicators. Hay Stack Brook showed strong evidence for nitrification on the basis of all four nitrification indicators while Landing Creek was nitrifying little if at all. Hammonton Creek is apparently nitrifying, but because of uncertainty in the downstream trends of the nitrogen species, and a lower level of alkalinity neutralization, it is nitrifying less than Hay Stack Brook. Squankum Branch showed some evidence for nitrification on the basis of the BOD/NOD incubations. The acidic character of these streams does not appear to be an exclusive factor in determining whether the stream will undergo nitrification.

Flood of August 31--September 1, 1978, in Crosswicks Creek Basin and Vicinity, Central New Jersey

Description: From abstract: "A thunderstorm during the evening of August 31 and the morning of September 1, 1978, caused flooding in a small area of South-central New Jersey. Maximum peaks of record occurred on the Upper Crosswicks Creek basin in the vicinity of Fort Dix, Wrightstown, and New Egypt. At New Egypt, high water crest elevations for Crosswicks Creek were approximately four feet higher than the previous maximum recorded on August 28, 1971.

Radioactive Rare-Earth Deposit at Scrub Oaks Mine, Morris County, New Jersey

Description: From abstract: A deposit of rare-earth minerals in the Scrub Oaks iron mine, Morris County, N. J., was mapped and sampled in 1955. The rare-earth minerals are mainly in coarse-grained magnetite ore and in pegmatite adjacent to it. Discrete bodies of rare-earth-bearing magnetite ore apparently follow the plunge of the main magnetite ore body at the north end of the mine. Radioactivity of the ore containing rare earths is about 0.2 to 0.6 milliroentgens per hour.

Radiometric Reconnaissance Examination in Southeastern Pennsylvania and Western New Jersey

Description: Abstract: In May 1950, 350 miles of road was traversed in the vicinity of a torbernite locality in New Jersey. The radioactivity of the area traversed was two to three times above normal, averaging 0.003 percent equivalent uranium. It is estimated that there is 1,000 tons of rock averaging 0.009 percent uranium at the torbernite locality. The presence of this area of above-normal radioactivity suggests that further study is needed in the Piedmont belt and the flanking sediments, which may contain economic deposits of uranium minerals.

The Lyon Station-Paulins Kill Nappe : the Frontal Structure of the Musconetcong Nappe System in Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey

Description: From abstract: Geologic and aeromagnetic data show that a major tectonic unit underlies rocks of the Musconetcong nappe in the Great Valley of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. This structure, the Lyon Station-Paulins Kill nappe, can be traced from Lyon Station, Pa., at least to Branchville, N.J., a distance of about 120 km. The nappe has a core of Precambrian crystalline rocks as shown by an aeromagnetic anomaly that has the same signature as the outcropping Precambrian rocks of the Musconetcong nappe. This core extends at least 70 km east from Lyon Station to Bangor, Pa., the eastern limit of the aeromagnetic survey. This report details the frontal structure of this system.

The Crystal Cavities of the New Jersey Zeolite Region

Description: From abstract: The crystal cavities present in the mineral complex of the New Jersey traprock region have long excited the interest of mineralogists. In 1914 Fenner made the first detailed and comprehensive study of these cavities and suggested that babingtonite was the original mineral. Soon after this anhydrite was found occupying parts of some of the cavities at one of the quarries. At this time, too, Wherry concluded that glauberite was the original mineral of some of the cavities because of his studies of similar crystal cavities in Triassic shale at different places.
