A Data-Management System for Areal Interpretive Data for the High Plains in Parts of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming

A Numerical Model to Evaluate Proposed Ground-Water Allocations in Southwest Kansas

Description: Abstract: A computer model was developed to calculate the drawdown, due to a proposed well, at all existing wells in the section of the proposed well and at all wells in the adjacent eight sections. The depletion expected in the 9-square-mile area due to all existing wells and the proposed well is computed and compared with allowable limits defined by the Southwest Kansas Groundwater Management District No. 3. An optional program permits the evaluation of allowable depletion for one or more townships. All options are designed to run interactively, thus allowing for immediate evaluation of proposed ground-water withdrawals.

Application of Remote-Sensing Techniques to Hydrologic Studies in Selected Coal-Mined Areas of Southeastern Kansas

Description: From introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey is currently conducting a two-phase investigation designed to provide hydrologic information about the coal-producing area in Miami, Linn, and Bourbon Counties of eastern Kansas (fig. 1). These objectives are to: (1) assemble and interpret existing hydrologic data; (2) describe the physical and hydrologic environments based on existing data; and (3) determine additional data needed to evaluate the impacts of coal mining on the hydrology of the study area.

Water-Quality and Fluvial-Sediment Characteristics of Selected Streams in Northeast Kansas

Description: From purpose and scope: The purposes of this investigation were to: (1) establish a data base for water-quality and fluvial-sediment characteristics of selected streams that will serve as a basis for documenting current (1982) conditions, (2) develop relationships between streamflow or specific conductance and water-quality characteristics that can be used to describe water-quality characteristics and determine discharges of dissolved solids, and (3) develop relationships between streamflow and suspended sediment that can be used to determine suspended sediment discharges of streams in the study area.

Tectonic Map of Western Nebraska and Northwestern Kansas Showing the Distribution of Uranium Occurrences

Description: From introduction: The Cordilleran Foreland (King. 1951, p. 58-62; Horberg and others, 1949, p. 192194) forms a broad north-south belt, parallel to and east of the Cordilleran geanticline (fig. 1), in which the predominant geologic structure is a series of anticlinal mountains and broad asymmetric basins that contrast sharply with the folds and overthrusts related to the Cordilleran geanticline. A tectonic map of most of the Cordilleran Foreland (fig. 2) is being compiled as an aid to study the geologic setting of uranium deposits within the region, and to determine what relationships may exist between the distribution of uranium deposits and the regional tectonic pattern (Osterwald, 1955). The map will show the distribution of faults, uranium deposits, areas of volcanic activity, and crestlines and troughs of folds.

Radioactivity in Some Oil Fields of Southeastern Kansas

Description: From abstract: Radium-bearing precipitates derived from 'oil-well fluids have been found in more than 60 oil and gas fields in Cowley, Butler, Marion, Sedgwick, and Greenwood Counties of southeastern Kansas. The abnormal radioactivity of these precipitates has been studied through the use of gamma-ray and sample logs; by radiometric, chemical petrographic, and spectrographic analyses of the precipitates and drill samples; and through the use of chemical analyses of brines collected from oil wells in the areas of high radioactivity.

The three major areas of interest considered in this condition survey were the structural condition of the primary airfield pavements, the condition of pavement repairs and the types of maintenance materials that have been used at this airfield, and any detrimental effects of frost action to the pavement facilities.
