Quicksilver Deposits Near the Little Missouri River, Pike County, Arkansas

Description: From introduction: In this study the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, cooperated. The author prepared detailed geologic maps showing the surface topography, geology, and workings of 11 mines, and the underground workings and geology of 7 of these; the Bureau of Mines engineers directed diamond-drilling and.bulldozer-trenching. The locations of the detailed maps are shown on plate 23, an index map overprinted on a segment of the map made by Reed and Wells.

Geology and Mineral Resources of the Western Part of the Arkansas Coal Field

Description: From introduction: This report describes the mineral resources of the western part of the Arkansas coal field and considers the features of geologic structure and stratigraphy that are essential to an understanding of the nature of occurrence of the mineral resources. The area is an irregular-shaped tract of about 1,100 square miles in Scott, Sebastian, Crawford, Franklin, and Logan Counties, in west-central Arkansas.

Niobium (Columbium) and Titanium at Magnet Cove and Potash Sulphur Springs, Arkansas

Description: From Abstract: Niobium (columbium) and titanium occur in several minerals and rocks of the Magnet Cove and Potash Sulphur Springs areas. Niobium is in demand for use in high-temperature and noncreep steels; titanium metal is becoming an important structural material. The Magnet Cove and Potash Sulphur Springs areas are in central Arkansas between the communities of Malvern and Hot Springs. They are underlain by similar alkalic igneous complexes consisting of nepheline syenite, more basic alkalic rocks, and calcite rock or carbonatite. The igneous rocks transect sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic age and were truncated by erosion of Late Cretaceous age.

Airborne Reconnaissance in Southwestern Arkansas

Description: Introduction: Reconnaissance for uranium in central and southwestern Arkansas was carried out as a joint project of the U.S. Atomic energy Commission and the U.S. Geological Survey during March and May 1954. The project was planned as an investigation of several areas of known abnormal radioactivity, and as a search for others, by airborne and ground radiometric reconnaissance.

Instrumentation Observations from the U-Frame Lock of the Arkansas River Lock and Dam 5

Description: Report regarding analysis of a lock and dam in the Arkansas River. "The purpose of this study is to take 8 years of instrumentation data from Lock No. 5 and report it in such a manner that it can be used later in other studies, such as a finite element analysis. Included is a discussion of the quality of the data and a brief comparison of measured values with design cases for several soil-structure interaction cases" (p. 5).
