Some Natural Variations in the Relative Abundance of Copper Isotopes

Description: Abstract: "The relative isotopic abundance of copper has been measured in a number of minerals. Suites of samples from Michigan and the Colorado Plateau have been examined to determine if local variations due to isotopic exchange or diffusion could be found. The relative isotopic abundance of copper in specimens from a number of other places was also determined. The variations noted were small but in most cases were felt to be significant because they were larger than the experimental error (0.1 percent in the ratio). A total spread of +3 to -8 parts per mil compared to the standard was found in the specimens tested."

Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance Basic Data for Iron Mountain NTMS Quadrangle, Michigan; Wisconsin

Description: From abstract: Results of a reconnaissance geochemical survey of the Iron Mountain Quadrangle, Michigan; Wisconsin are reported. Field and laboratory data are presented for 479 groundwater samples, 369 stream sediment samples, and 389 stream water samples. Statistical and areal distributions of uranium and other possible uranium-related variables are displayed. A generalized geologic map of the survey area is provided, and pertinent geologic factors which may be of significance in evaluating the potential for uranium mineralization are briefly discussed.

Pre-Cambrian Rocks of the Lake Superior Region: A Review of Newly Discovered Geologic Features, with a Revised Geologic Map

Description: From abstract: Detailed knowledge of the geology of the pre-Cambrian rocks of the Lake Superior region has been greatly augmented since the publication of Monograph 52 by the United States Geological Survey in 1911. The authors have attempted in the present report to assemble as much of this new information as possible, and to give the reader a birdseye view of the geology as seen in the light of all studies made there up to the present time. Detailed descriptions are not presented, and the emphasis is placed upon the major problems of correlation. A revised map of the region, with cross sections, accompanies the report, bringing up to date a knowledge of the areal geology of the region, which otherwise could be gained only by consulting some 150 maps contained in almost as many separate local reports, many of which are unpublished.

Estimating Generalized Flood Skew Coefficients for Michigan

Description: From purpose and scope: The purpose of this report is to compare and evaluate four methods of estimating flood-frequency skew coefficients for Michigan. These methods are based on use of (1) the generalized skew map of the United States, (2) maps showing lines of equal mean skew of Michigan, (3) mean regional station skews, and (4) skew-prediction equations.

Ground-Water Contamination at Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Michigan

Description: From introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey, at the request of the U.S. Air Force, began an investigation of geologic and hydrologic conditions at Wurtsmith Air Force Base in September 1979. The investigation was prompted by the discovery that an underground storage tank containing trichloroethylene (TCE) had leaked, contaminating Base water-supply wells. Subsequent information suggested that the trichloroethylene had moved off-Base.

Geology and Monazite Content of the Goodrich Quartzite, Palmer Area, Marquette County, Michigan

Description: From abstract: The Palmer area, which is on the south limb of the Marquette synclinorium, consists of a down-faulted block of pre-Cambrian sedimentary rocks about 4 miles long and three-quarters of a mile wide. The block is composed mainly of middle Huronian Ajibik quartzite and Negaunee iron-formation and upper Huronian Goodrich quartzite,. Monazite occurs in the Goodrich quartzite as rounded detrital grains concentrated mainly in the matrix of quartz pebble conglomerate which is interbedded with coarse-grained quartzite.

Greens Creek Uranium Occurrence, Marquette County, Michigan

Description: From abstract: Metatorbernite and bassetite are present in altered carbonaceous and quartzose slate of probable upper Huronian age. The slate is part of a small inlier of Huronian rocks between the Gwinn iron district to the southeast and the Marquette iron district to the northwest, Marquette County, Mich. Samples taken from a shallow trench, which was dug in the area of highest radioactivity, contained as much as 0.68 percent uranium. A 4-foot channel sample of the slate contained 0.036 percent uranium.
