Thorium Bismuthide : Ultrasonic Control of Crystal Size

Description: Thorium bismuthide when crystallized from a solution i bismuth results in large platelets which may be as large a 1 centimeter in diameter. A slurry of these platelets is difficult to pump through pipe lines and filters. The particle size can be reduced by (1) very rapid cooing (approximately 1000 degree C per second) or (2) ultrasonic treatment. The latter, much easier to attain in large scale, gives equiaxed particles of thorium bismuthide.

A Study of the Mechanisms of Heat Treatment of Zirconium-Base Alloys : Status Report, July 1, 1955 - February 29, 1956

Description: The kinetics of transformation of zirconium binary alloys is being pursued. Mechanical property variation as a function of transformation if also being investigated. Zirconium-tin and zirconium-titanium alloys transform very rapidly when quenched from the beta field. These alloys have, generally speaking, been demonstrated to be not amenable to heat treatment in the normal sense of the word. Eutectoid alloys, principally zirconium-molybdenum alloys, have shown a definite response to heat treatm… more

Chemical Development Section C Progress Report for October-November 1960

Description: Studies are being made on the recovery of thorium (and uranium) from granitic rock, since this source represents a very large potential thorium reserve for the nuclear power industry. In preliminary leaching studies on 16 granite samples (containing 8-95 ppm thorium and 1.5-16 ppm uranium), maximum recoveries of thorium and uranium ranged 30-85% and 15-65% respectively, and sulfuric acid consumption was high (30-120 lbs H2SO4 per ton of granite). A relatively high acidity was needed to obtain r… more

The Lindemann and Grüneisen Laws

Description: The Lindemann assumption of direct contact of neighboring atoms at fusion is replaced by the criterion that melting occurs when the root-mean-square amplitude of thermal vibration reaches a critical fraction ρ, presumed the same for all isotropic monatomic solids, of the distance of separation of nearest-neighbor atoms. The Debye-Waller theory of the temperature dependence of the intensity of Bragg reflection of x-rays is used, without further assumptions, to derive a generalized Lindemann law… more

Gas Plated Coatings on Metals and Alloys : Progress Report No. 1

Description: The object of this project is to conduct studies on the coating of metals and alloys by the gas plating process. Coatings to be studied consist of chromium on copper; alloys of nickel chromium on copper; molybdenum on stainless steel and Inconel; chromium on stainless steel and Inconel; and tungsten and molybdenum and their carbides on stainless steel and Inconel.

Appendix B. Results of Water-Sample Analyses Performed in the Field

Description: Tables listing by sample number data regarding water sample analyses performed in the field for a study identifying geologic environments favorable for uranium in parts of the Raleigh, North Carolina quadrangle. Ground-water samples were collected from wells and analyzed in the field for U₃0₈ and ²²²Rn.

Erosion Experiments of Powder Compacted Uranium Dioxide Under Dynamic Steam Flow (Preliminary Report)

Description: Experiments were carried out to determine the erosion, oxidation and dimensional characteristics of purposely defected fuel elements containing unsintered UO2 powder prepared by the swaging technique. The experiments were conducted in an out-of-reactor loop under superheat conditions of pressure, temperature, flow velocity and steam chemical composition.

VARI Solution of Simultaneous, First-Order, Ordinary, Differential Equations

Description: VARI solves on the IBM-650 a system of simultaneous, first-order, ordinary, differential equations. The program was written so that a large number of calculations could be done in a reasonable length of time. The program permits the consideration of the production of the isotope by absorption and/or decay of one or more of any of the other isotopes in the chain.

Preliminary Leaching Tests for the Extraction of Uranium From Various Monticello Stockpile Ores

Description: In a section of the area occupied by the Atomic Energy Commission in Grand Junction, Colorado, a pilot plant is being erected to test a resin-in-pulp process. The process is based on the adsorption of uranium by resin from acid pulps. The first ores to be treated at this plant will be Monticello Stockpile Material. Samples of the various stockpiles sere subjected to a series of leaching, filtering and settling tests, the results of which are presented in this report.

Recovery of Manganese Dioxide From Rand Barren Solutions

Description: In the course of recovering uranium from Rand cyanide residues, large volumes of barren acid liquors are produced. With the flowsheets now under consideration it is not advisable to recycle such liquors and they are to be discarded. Consideration was given to the removal of manganese under conditions that would permit its recovery as MnO2.

Fast Neutron Cross Sections: Corrections to LA-1714 and a Correlation of 3 Mev Values

Description: Recent measurements on the long counter efficiency in which comparisons were made with the (n, p) scattering cross section, additional variations in efficiency were found which varied slowly with neutron energy but were still correlated with the total neutron cross section of carbon. Because of these variations in efficiency there are errors in the fission cross sections reported in LA-1714. Corrections to these data have been given here.

Process Development Studies for Recovering Ba140 From Irradiated Enriched-Uranium Rods

Description: As an alternative to recovering Ba140 from the spent MTR fuel assemblies a new enriched-uranium fuel pin was designed for irradiation. Two specimens, each containing about 3 g. of uranium (93% enriched), were irradiated to 1.3% and about 18% burnup. Examination after irradiation indicated that design improvements were needed; photographs are presented to illustrate the damage incurred during irradiation. A simple inorganic chemical process using precipitation and filtration techniques was devel… more

Determination of Ruthenium in Plutonium

Description: An analytical procedure for 0.04 to 1.6 percent ruthenium in plutonium metal was developed. Determination of ruthenium in metallic plutonium was investigated as part of a program for securing analytical procedures for various metals in plutonium. However, results of the investigation are given in this report with emphasis on the determination of ruthenium in plutonium chloride solutions. Specifically, this report is primarily concerned with the separation and determination of 40 to 400 microgra… more
