Coal-Mine Accidents in the United States and Foreign Countries

Description: From Introduction: "The lack of comparable and accurate statistics of coal-mine accidents in the united States as a whole led the Bureau of Mines in 1911 to undertake the collection of such data. The mining departments of the leading foreign coal-producing countries have long taken cognizance of the importance of statistics. The bureau feels that in presenting the tables embodied in this report it is offering the and comparable statistics of coal-min accidents for the country as a whole that have ever been published."

Commercial Deductions from Comparisons of Gasoline and Alcohol Tests on Internal-Combustion Engines

Description: From Introduction: "The following report is a summary of the commercial results which were obtained from 2,000 tests conducted by technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey at St. Louis, Mo., and Norfolk, Va., in 1907 and 1908, under the technical supervision of R.H. Fernald, engineer in charge of the producer-gas section."

Comparative Fuel Values of Gasoline and Denatured Alcohol in Internal-Combustion Engines

Description: From Introduction: "Under the terms of the act establishing the Bureau of Mines, this bureau was authorized to carry on the work of testing and analyzing fuels which had been conducted by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. Therefore, the first investigations of the liquid mineral fuels logically embraced a careful series of comparative tests of gasoline and denatured alcohol in engines. The report is published by the Bureau of Mines because of the transfer of the fuel-testing investigations to this bureau."

Comparative Tests of Run-of-Mine and Briquetted Coal on the Torpedo Boat Biddle

Description: From Introduction: "With the particular equipment used in the tests both coal and briquets were far from smokeless; consequently the data of this bulletin are applicable only by analogy to parallel operation with a coal more nearly smokeless, but nevertheless applicable with much reliability. It was the original intention to make a set of preliminary steaming tests alongside a dock (which tests furnish material for this bulletin) an to finish with a set of running tests at sea; but the running tests were never made. for lack of time and men."

Groundwater in Alluvium of the Lower Mississippi Valley (Upper and Central Areas): Volume 1

Description: Summary: "This report provides data on the alluvial aquifer of the Lower Mississippi Valley in the area between Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and Port Gibson, Mississippi. Maps are presented of the Tertiary surface on which the alluvial aquifer rests as well as the geology of this surface and the areas where hydrologic recharge to the alluvial aquifer may occur. A set of piezometric-surface maps, together with hydrographs of observation wells, river stages, precipitation rates, and data on the hydrologic properties of the alluvium, makes it possible to calculate changes which take place in the aquifer. Further data are presented on the chemical quality of groundwater. The relevance of these data to engineering problems is discussed" (p. ix).
