20,000 KW Nuclear Power Plant Study for United States Atomic Energy Commission

Description: Introduction: In September of 156, Gilbert Associates, Inc., entered into a contract with the United States of America, acting through the United States Atomic Energy Commission, for the study and preliminary design of a nuclear power plant being considered for integration into a central station power system at an overseas site.

Adsorption of Zirconium-Niobium on Silica Gel

Description: From abstract: "Adsorption of radioactive zirconium-niobium from uranyl nitrate solutions by silica gel was increased by increasing the temperature and time the solution contacts silica gel, and decreased by "aging" the solutions before contacting the silica gel."

Amplitude and Phase Functions for the Revised Parameters of the Cambridge Electron Accelerator

Description: "The phase and amplitude functions describing the betatron oscillations in the synchrotron are calculated using the revised parameters of the Cambridge Electron Accelerator. The results are given numerically and plotted in a graph for one machine period."

Analysis of Meteorological Tower Data, April 1950 - March 1952, Brookhaven National Laboratory

Description: Report issued by the Brookhaven National Laboratory discussing data collected from two BNL meteorological towers. As stated in the introduction, "results are presented in graphic form rather than tabular form" (p. 1). This report includes tables, maps, illustrations, and photographs.

Booby Traps

Description: The following report provides data taken of problematic situations that have led to accidental prompt-critical radiation bursts in critical assemblies laboratories, as well as a few risky instances. The purpose of this report is to prevent these mistakes from happening in the future.

The Chlorine Trifluoride-Hydrogen Fluoride System. Some Vapor Pressure and Conductance Measurements

Description: The possible existence of a stable complex between chlorine trifluoride and hydrogen fluoride made further study of this system desirable. We have therefore investigated the vapor pressures and specific conductances of solutions of hydrogen fluoride in chlorine trifluoride.

Critical Strain Value for Alpha Recrystallized Rolled Uranium Sheet

Description: Abstract: "The percentage strain at which, or immediately higher than which, grain growth occurs on cold worked alpha recrystallize uranium sheet, appears to be at approximately 2-1/2 percent reduction in thickness. Grain growth from 20 microns to over 150 microns has been indicated for this region. This phenomena is especially noteworthy when deep drawn uranium shapes are to be reheated for a coining or restriking operation."

Design and economic study of hot off-gas storage system

Description: From introduction: "One of the most important factors which must be considered in the chemical processing of spent fuel elements is the safe and economic disposal of gaseous radioactive fission product wastes given off in the fuel element dissolution operation. For this reason work is underway at ORNL to study the various gas disposal methods that might be used to handle the radioactive fission product gases, krypton, xenon, and iodine."

Determining Sampling Reliability in Bulk Ores

Description: Abstract: "The problem of evaluating the method of sampling used on a particular uranium ore or concentrate is considered. It is pointed out that the purpose of this evaluation is to obtain data on possible biases of the sampling method, the way the sample is prepared for analysis, and the analysis itself. In addition, it is pointed out that some estimate of precision, either overall or individually, for each step is required. Examples of the use of the analysis of variance approach to these pr… more

Drilling in the Flatirons Locality, Monument Valley, Arizona

Description: From introduction: A subsurface exploration program was undertaken to investigate the concentration of uranium and vanadium in or near the base of the Shinarump member of the Chinle formation in the Flatirons locality, and to develop criteria whereby adjacent unexplored areas could be evaluated as to potential production capacity from study of geological and mineralogical features at the host rook outcrop. An earlier study of the area by C. G. Evensen of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission had s… more

Drying of Charcoal Used for Adsorption of Gaseous Fission Products from Homogeneous Reactors

Description: In homogeneous nuclear reactors significant quantities of radioactive inert gaseous fission products must be separated from the fuel solution for disposal. The present disposal scheme, which is employed on the HRT, is to pass the mixture of fission product gases and oxygen through a charcoal adsorption bed. the oxygen passes through the bed relatively un-adsorbed, but the radioactive inert gases are adsorbed and are displaced from the bed bed very slowly giving the gases a much greater residenc… more
