Acid-Mine-Drainage Problems: Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania

Description: Report from the U.S. Bureau of Mines discussing the anthracite region of Pennsylvania and the efforts to prevent coal-mine drainage into nearby streams. According to the introduction, "The purpose of this report is not to develop a practicable or feasible method or process of treating acid mine water but rather to present available factual and deduced data that may be useful in showing pH range over which the treatment is to take place and the sludge products most likely to be handled" (p. 2).

Acoustic radiation from two-dimensional rectangular cutouts in aerodynamic surfaces

Description: From Introduction: "The experiments in high-speed flow showed that an intense, high-frequency acoustic radiation is an essential feature of the problem. Consequently, a study of the acoustic field (involving schlieren observations and frequency and intensity measurements) was undertaken. This report presents the salient features of the study, which was mainly exploratory."

Airborne Radioactivity Survey of the Red Desert Region, Sweetwater County, Wyoming

Description: From abstract: An airborne radioactivity survey of a selected area in the Red Desert, Sweetwater County, Wyoming, containing outcrops of radioactive lignites and shales of known surface extent and uranium content, was flown on flight lines at three levels, respectively 250, 500, and 1,000 feet above the ground and spaced at one-quarter mile intervals. Measurements from three identical dual-channel radiation detectors were simultaneously recorded to obtain data at various distances from natural radioactive sources of known configuration. The radiation intensity measurements were fully corrected for all extraneous effects and were compiled as profiles of radiation intensity, as an isoradioactivity contour map, and as curves showing the relationship between radiation intensity and distance from the source.

Airborne Radioactivity Surveys for Phosphate in Florida

Description: Introduction: Deposits of phosphate in Florida, located beyond the limits of known producing areas, have been reported by prospectors and mining companies. Much of the information has been based upon prospecting and exploration which was undertaken many years ago and as a result the published data relating to the occurrence of these deposits are fragmentary, and few details relating to specific locations and extent are available.

Airborne Radioactivity Surveys in the Mojave Desert Region, Kern, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties, California

Description: From abstract: Airborne radioactivity surveys in the Mojave Desert region, Kern, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties were made in five areas recommended as favorable for the occurrence of radioactive raw materials: (1) Rock Corral area, San Bernardino County. (2) Searles Station area, Kern County. (3) Soledad area, Kern County, (4) White Tank area, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. (5) Harvard Hills area, San Bernardino County. Anomalous radiation was detected in all but the Harvard Hills area.

Airborne Reconnaissance in Southwestern Arkansas

Description: Introduction: Reconnaissance for uranium in central and southwestern Arkansas was carried out as a joint project of the U.S. Atomic energy Commission and the U.S. Geological Survey during March and May 1954. The project was planned as an investigation of several areas of known abnormal radioactivity, and as a search for others, by airborne and ground radiometric reconnaissance.

Airborne Reconnaissance Project, Green River Basin, Wyoming

Description: Abstract: A part of the Green River Basin airborne reconnaissance project, re: memo to Phillip L. Merritt, March 12, 1954, Proposed Airborne Reconnaissance Project, Green River Basin, Wyoming, was completed during the months from July though October 1954. No uranium mineralization of commercial value was found.

Airborne Reconnaissance Project, Ruby Range and Sweetwater Basin, Montana

Description: Abstract: A low-level airborne radioactivity survey of parts of Beaverhead and Madison Counties in southwestern Montana was undertaken from June 6 to October 14, 1955. Flying centered around the Ruby Range-Sweetwater Basin area and concentrated on the Precambrian metamorphic complex and Tertiary lake-bed sediments. No commercial uranium deposits were discovered, and no extensions were found of the few known small occurrences. Five areas of high background detected through the survey were investigated on the ground.

Analyses of Tipple and Delivered Samples of Coal: (Collected During the Fiscal Years 1948 to 1950 Inclusive)

Description: From Forward: "This bulletin is the first of a new series, which includes analyses of only tipple and delivered coal. It covers samples collected throughout the United States from July 1, 1947 to June 30, 1950 (fiscal years 1948-50). It is planned that future publications of this series will cover a period of one fiscal year only and be issued as soon as possible after June 30 of each year."
