Preliminary investigation of the altitude performance of pentaborane and a pentaborane : JP-4 blend in an experimental 9.5-inch-diameter tubular combustor

Description: From Summary: "A preliminary investigation was conducted to determine the altitude performance of pentaborane and a blend fuel of 64.2 percent pentaborane in JP-4 fuel in a tubular combustor of a current production type turbojet engine. Deposits on the liner barrel and dome were virtually nonexistent. The combustion efficiency of 90 to 94 percent for pentaborane and approximately 90 percent for the blend. Outlet temperature profiles were marginal; however, the developed combustor provided lower… more

A Preliminary Study of Molten Salt Power Reactors

Description: A preliminary study of molten salt power reactors was made. The most promising fuel carrier salts were the fluorides and chlorides of the alkali metals, zirconium, and beryllium. The chlorides were found to have lower melting points but were less stable and more corrosive than the fluorides. A Li/sup 7/ F- - BeF/sub 2/ mixture with ThF/sub 4/ and UF/sub 4/appeared to perform best. Of the numerous alloys tested as container material, Inconel and a nickel-- molybdenum alloy INOR-8 appeared to be … more

Pressure Rise in HRT Shield Due to Reactor and Replacement heat Exchanger Rupture

Description: .Recalculations were made of HRT cell pressures in the event of a simultaneous rupture of the reactor core vessel and the fuel and blanket heat exchangers. These calculations will be applicable after the replacement fuel heat exchanger is installed. The pressure rise in the cell is plotted as a function of time. A maximum cell pressure of 34 psig is achieved ~7 sec after rupture.

Quarterly Report of the Solution Corrosion Group for the Period Ending April 30, 1957

Description: A third test of the mockup of the Zircaloy - stainless steel transition joint as used in the HRT reactor vessel was completed. No additional mechanical deflections of the bellows were made, but 12 additional thermal cycles of the unit were carried out. . The joint and bellows functioned properly and were leak-tight. Corrosion of stainless steel in 0.04 m UO2SO4 containing equimolar beryllium sulfate was not greater at 10-15 fps and much less at 15-75 fps, than in HRT solution at 200 and 225 C. … more

Radioactive Waste Disposal

Description: Abstract: This is a selective bibliography of books and periodical articles relating to radioactive waste disposal. Material in the bibliography is concerned primarily with methods for the handling and disposal of wastes and the results of these methods. Auxiliary material indicating methods of determining radioactivity in wastes has been included. Sources consulted include: Chemical Abstracts, 1950-1955; Engineering Index, 1950-1955; Industrial Arts Index 1950-March 1957; Nuclear Science Abstr… more

Reconnaissance of Geology and Uranium Occurrences of the Upper Alamosa Creek Valley : Catron County, New Mexico

Description: From abstract: "The Crevasse Canyon formation and Point Lookout(?) sandstone of Late Cretaceous age and the Baca and Datil formations of Tertiary age were mapped in an area of 168 square miles in the upper Alamosa Creek Valley along the northern edge of the Datil Mountains, Catron County, N. Mex. The investigation was made to determine the potentialities of the area for producing uranium and to learn the geologic controls for the concentration of uranium."

Report of Slurry Blanket Test Run SM-2

Description: Run SM-2 was run to determine whether a sulfated ThO2 slurry could be handled in a hydrodynamic system similar to the HRT test blanket. It was found that the ThO2 concentration circulating in the pipes was consistently 50% or less of the expected concentration based on the quantity of the oxide changed. The run lasted 1730 hours. It was terminated because of a slurry leak a few days before a shutdown had been scheduled. Severe erosion was found in the pump impeller and flow nozzle . Chloride co… more

The response of an airplane to random atmospheric disturbances

Description: The statistical approach to the gust-load problem which consists in considering flight through turbulent air to be a stationary random process is extended by including the effect of lateral variation of the instantaneous gust intensity on the aerodynamic forces. The forces obtained in this manner are used in dynamic analyses of rigid and flexible airplanes free to move vertically, in pitch, and in roll. The effect of the interaction of longitudinal, vertical, and lateral gusts on the wing stres… more

Results of Beam Inflection Tests

Description: "An experimental study has been made regarding the passage of a beam of 100-kV ions (H⁺ and H₂⁺) across a magnetic field by means of a crossed electric field." This experiment was designed to answer the following questions: "(1) Is there a limit to the current that will traverse a magnetic field by the action of a crossed electric field? If so, what is the limit? (2) Do difficulties arise in maintaining the electric field? (3) For the source employed, what is the angular divergence and current … more

Rupture strength of several nickel-base alloys in sheet form

Description: The 100-hour rupture strengths of Inconel X, Inconel 700, Incoloy 901, Refractaloy 26, and R-235 at 1200 and 1350 F. in both the annealed and heat-treated conditions were determined. Inconel 700 had the highest rupture strength at both temperatures; Incoloy 901 was second strongest at 1200 F, and R-235 second strongest at 1350 F. With the exception of Incoloy 901, ductility was low. Photomicrographs show that fractures are through the grain boundaries. Results are compared with published data f… more
