Airborne Radioactivity Survey of the Red Desert Region, Sweetwater County, Wyoming

Description: From abstract: An airborne radioactivity survey of a selected area in the Red Desert, Sweetwater County, Wyoming, containing outcrops of radioactive lignites and shales of known surface extent and uranium content, was flown on flight lines at three levels, respectively 250, 500, and 1,000 feet above the ground and spaced at one-quarter mile intervals. Measurements from three identical dual-channel radiation detectors were simultaneously recorded to obtain data at various distances from natural radioactive sources of known configuration. The radiation intensity measurements were fully corrected for all extraneous effects and were compiled as profiles of radiation intensity, as an isoradioactivity contour map, and as curves showing the relationship between radiation intensity and distance from the source.

Airborne Radiometric Survey of the East Flank of the Big Horn Mountains, Wyoming and Montana

Description: Abstract: An airborne radiometric survey of parts of the east flank of the Big Horn Mountains was begun on June 23, and completed on August 27, 1952. An area of approximately 250 square miles was covered, and only two anomalies were found in the entire area. Flight lines were arranged in accordance with the geology of the area, particular attention being given to formations the stratigraphic equivalents of which are known to be uranium bearing in other areas. Two additional zones of radioactivity were found by ground investigation, but assays from both the ground and the airborne discoveries showed no economic uranium deposits.

Analyses of Coals in the United States with Descriptions of Mine and Field Samples Collected between July 1, 1904 and June 30, 1910 Part 2. Descriptions of Samples

Description: From Introduction: "This volume contains the descriptions of the samples whose analyses are published in the preceding volume, Part I of this bulletin. The descriptions have been compiled from the notebooks of the persons who collected the samples, have been condensed from accounts given in published reports of the United States Geological Survey, or have furnished by the collection themselves. Inasmuch as the descriptions represent the work of many persons during a period of six years, and inasmuch as they were recorded under widely differing conditions, they necessarily vary in fullness detail."

Analyses of Tipple and Delivered Samples of Coal: (Collected During the Fiscal Years 1948 to 1950 Inclusive)

Description: From Forward: "This bulletin is the first of a new series, which includes analyses of only tipple and delivered coal. It covers samples collected throughout the United States from July 1, 1947 to June 30, 1950 (fiscal years 1948-50). It is planned that future publications of this series will cover a period of one fiscal year only and be issued as soon as possible after June 30 of each year."

An Analysis of Salinity in Streams of the Green River Basin

Description: Abstract: Dissolved-solids concentrations and loads can be estimated from streamflow records using a regression model derived from chemical analyses of monthly samples. The model takes seasonal effects into account by the inclusion of simple-harmonic time functions. Monthly mean dissolved-solids loads simulated for a 6-year period at U.S. Geological Survey water-quality stations in the Green River Basin of Wyoming agree closely with corresponding loads estimated from daily specific-conductance records. In a demonstration of uses of the model, an average gain of 114,000 tons of dissolved solids per year was estimated for 6-year period in a 70-mile reach of the Green River from Fontemelle Reservoir to the town of Green River, including the lower 30-mile reach of the Big Sandy River.

Analysis of Stream Quality in the Yampa River Basin, Colorado and Wyoming

Description: From introduction: This report relates to the first of the above objectives by describing stream quality in the Yampa River basin through 1976, with particular emphasis on conditions from August 1975 through September 1976. The content of this report is, at times, relatively technical. This is intentional. The report is aimed not at planners and decision makers but rather at those persons assigned the task of having to design, implement, and interpret a river basin assessment. The techniques and procedures used to determine ambient stream quality in the Yampa River basin have been presented in detail so that their applicability to other river basins can be determined. For the planner and decision maker, the results presented in this report are summarized in less technical terms in phase-l (Steele and others, 1979) and phase-ll summary reports.

An Assessment of the Collection and Analysis of Hydrologic Data by Private Contractors for the U.S. Geological Survey

Description: From abstract: During fiscal years 1978 through 1981, the U.S. Geological Survey contracted for the acquisition and analysis of hydrologic data from 104 surface water stations, 26 ground water stations, and 15 precipitation gages as well as for several hundred miscellaneous surface water measurements of flow and water quality. The work was performed in Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, terminating at the end of the fiscal year 1981. This report is an assessment of this contracting effort from the standpoint of cost and of quality control measures employed to ensure an acceptable product.

Bentonite Deposits of the Northern Black Hills District Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota

Description: From abstract: The northern Black Hills bentonite mining district includes parts of Crook County, Wyo., Carter County, Mont., and Butte County, S. Dak. Within this district, many beds of bentonite occur interspersed with sedimentary strata of Cretaceous age that have an average total thickness of about 3,000 feet and consist chiefly of marine shale, marl, and argillaceous sandstone. The bentonite beds occur in formations ranging upward from the Newcastle sandstone to the lower part of the Mitten black shale member of the Pierre shale. Tertiary (?) and Quaternary deposits of gravel, sand, and silt are present on extensive terraces, and deposits of such materials also extend along stream courses in all parts of the district.

Coal-Mine Accidents in the United States and Foreign Countries

Description: From Introduction: "The lack of comparable and accurate statistics of coal-mine accidents in the united States as a whole led the Bureau of Mines in 1911 to undertake the collection of such data. The mining departments of the leading foreign coal-producing countries have long taken cognizance of the importance of statistics. The bureau feels that in presenting the tables embodied in this report it is offering the and comparable statistics of coal-min accidents for the country as a whole that have ever been published."
