Availability and Chemical Quality of Water From Surficial Aquifers in Southwest Minnesota

Description: From introduction: The objectives of the study were to (1) determine the areal extent, thickness, and water-yielding capability of aquifers in the surficial deposits, (2) estimate the amount of water in storage in the aquifers, (3) determine the chemical quality of water in the aquifers and, (4) establish observation wells to monitor the effects of ground-water development on water levels and storage in the aquifers.

Buried Aquifers in the Brooten-Belgrade and Lake Emily Areas, West-Central Minnesota -- Factors Related to Developing Water for Irrigation

Description: Purpose and scope: The purpose of this report is to determine, as far as possible, the occurrence of buried aquifers and to describe their hydrologic characteristics and water-yielding capability. The evaluation is based mainly on 44 test holes drilled specifically for this investigation. These test holes are too widely spaced to correlate individual aquifers. Such correlation must await more detailed closely spaced test drilling. Forty-two test holes were drilled in the Brooten-Belgrade area; … more

Digital Models of a Glacial Outwash Aquifer in the Pearl-Sallie Lakes Area, West-Central Minnesota

Description: From purpose and scope: The purpose of this investigation is to 1) study the hydrologic system in a glaciated terrain typified by numerous lakes, with particular focus on the effects of lake-ground-water interchange, 2) simulate the natural system by using two digital modeling methods--areal (map view) and vertical section, and 3) evaluate the utility of the models and determine the kinds and amount of basic data needed to obtain reasonable simulations.

The Eruptive and Sedimentary Rocks on Pigeon Point, Minnesota, and Their Contact Phenomena

Description: From preface: The preparation of this paper is due to the fact that the eruptive rocks occurring on Pigeon point, Minnesota, may be taken as types of similar eruptives found so widely spread over the Huronian and Keweenawan areas surrounding Lake Superior, and to the peculiar nature of the alteration these have superinduced in the fragmental rocks through which they have broken.

Fortran Computer Programs to Plot and Process Aquifer Pressure and Temperature Data

Description: From introduction: In this report, two programs have been developed for use in managing data derived from an aquifer thermal-energy storage (ATES) project being done by the University of Minnesota. Data are generated from temperature and pressure measuring devices that are read automatically by a datalogger. Up to 100 channels can be scanned every 10 seconds and recorded on magnetic tape or printed as paper output. Time period of up to several years of data may be represented on a single tape.

Ground-Water Appraisal of the Pineland Sands Area, Central Minnesota

Description: Purpose and scope: The major purpose of this study is to evaluate the ground-water resources in the Pineland Sands area and their potential for development. The study focuses mainly on the surficial aquifer, the single most readily available source of ground water. Primary objectives of the study are (1) map the areal extent and thickness of the surficial aquifer, (2) determine its ability to transmit water to wells and define the availability of the water, (3) describe the chemical quality of … more

Ground Water for Irrigation in the Viking Basin, West-Central Minnesota

Description: Abstract: The Viking Basin consists of six glacial outwash areas in Douglas, Ottertail, and Todd Counties, west-central Minnesota. Total area is 340 square miles (880 square kilometers). Soils are sandy and excessively well-drained. Crops grown on the outwash would benefit from supplemental irrigation. Irrigation supplies can be obtained from wells in the surface outwash aquifer in significant parts of the large outwash areas near Carlos and Parkers Prairie and the small outwash area near Cloth… more

Hydrogeologic and Water-Quality Characteristics of the Ironton-Galesville Aquifer, Southeast Minnesota

Description: Introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey began a study in 1980 of the quality of water in the principal aquifers of Minnesota. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funded the study as part of the Underground Injection Control Program, which deals with disposal of liquid wastes beneath land surface. The initial report designated 14 aquifers in the State and provided general information about their geologic, hydrologic, and water-quality characteristics (Adolphson and others, 1981). Hydrogeologic Setting of the Glacial Lake Agassiz Peatlands, Northern Minnesota

Description: Abstract: Seven test holes drilled in the Glacial Lake Agassiz Peatlands indicate that the thickness of surficial materials along a north-south traverse parallel to Minnesota Highway 71 ranges from 163 feet near Blackduck, Minnesota to 57 feet about 3 miles south of Upper Red Lake. Lenses of sand and gravel occur immediately above bedrock on the Itasca moraine and are interbedded with lake clay and till under the peatlands. Vertical head gradients measured in a piezometer nest near Blackduck on… more
