The Blast Cleaning Process as an Aid to Visual Weld Inspection

Description: Late in 1958 it became apparent that some fuel elements were failing in the Hanford reactors as a result of water entering through the weld. The mode of entry appeared to be first through a void in the weld, then through a non-wet area or a train of voids in the braze, and finally to the uranium core. Defective closures of a similar nature were also typical of many fuel elements which have failed in the autoclaving operation as shown in Figure 1.

Code Listings for the Floss III - Compatible Programs Including Floss Type 3 and Type 12, Nomac, and Dash N

Description: FLOSS III is a third-generation version of a digital computer program which solves a one-dimensional difference representation of the momentum, energy, continuity, and state equations for turbulent, compressible gas flow in equivalent hydraulic channels. Extensive use of this program has been employed in the design and performance analyses of Pluto-type nuclear heat exchangers, and in the specific case of the Tory II-A test series, agreement was obtained to better than 5% for all experimentally… more

Ground Water Test Well D, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada

Description: Introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey is appraising the possibility, however slight, that the ground water beneath the Nevada Test Site, possibly contaminated by nuclear detonations, may carry radioactive fission products to places where they may constitute a public hazard.

Hazards Report for SM-1 Core II With the SM-1 Core II High Burnup Elements Replaced with SM-1 Core I Spare Elements

Description: Abstract: The removal of both SM-1 Core I high burnup elements from the SM-1 Core II and the insertion of two SM-1 Core I spare elements i their places are discussed. Nuclear and thermal characteristics of Core II with the change are presented and conclusion related to the change in hazard potential are made. If the core change indicated by this report is made, local peaking factors will be decreased and burnout ratios will be increased. This, of course, in itself leads to a more conservative… more

Laboratory Measurement of the Mass and Size of the Copper Atom

Description: An easy experiment for undergraduate students to measure the mass and diameter of a copper atom can be performed with inexpensive apparatus normally available any college physics laboratory. By measuring the density and by copperplating, one can obtain results which are accurate to better than 5%.

The Mass Spectra of the α-Amino Acids

Description: From abstract: "The mass spectra of the α-amino acids have been obtained in a mass spectrometer equipped with a heated crucible ion source. Correlations of these data have been made with the molecular formulae of the ion fragments, and mechanisms leading to these fragments are proposed. Comparisons of these data have been made with the mass spectra of the ethyl esters of the amino acids and with other carboxylic acids and their esters."

Measurement of the Rate for n" + He3 - H3 + [v]

Description: Measurement rate has been made using a high pressure, He3 filled, gas scintillation counter as the target for stopping muons. The counter is well suited to the problem since it allows for clean separation of the 1.9 MeV triton recoils and muon decay electrons, which are 300 times more numerous. The tritons, because of their short range, are detected with close to 100% efficiency, whereas the energy lost in the counter by the minimum ionizing electrons is less than 0.8 MeV in all cases. Furthe… more

Metastable States of Hyperfragments and the Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Λ-Hyperon

Description: "We want to point out that there is a possible method for determining the anomalous magnetic moment of the Λ from the observation of metastable states of hyperframents. There are two possible sources for the apparent difference of binding energies of a hyperfragment. One of these comes from the difference of Q values due to the decay into an excited and ground states of the residual nucleus. The other possibility will arise if there exists a metastable state of the decaying hyperfragment."

Pion Resonances in π⁻-p Interactions at 4.65 Bev/c

Description: This note describes some results of the study of single pion production in π⁻-p interactions at 4.65 Bev/c, using the BNL 20" Hydrogen Bubble Chamber. It is well known that the observability of some of the particle resonances (e.g. 33 Isobar and η) varies markedly with the energy of the incident particle. The ρ meson has been observed in π⁻-p interactions at 1.25 Bev/c and 1.9 Bev/c incident pion energies. Evidence will be shown that this resonance persists with the much higher incident pion en… more

Recovery of U from Pyrolytic Carbon-Coated UC2 Spheroids

Description: 100% recovery of uranium from pyrolytic carbon-coated spheroids of uranium dicarbide has been accomplished by an aqueous electrolytic process at the small scale laboratory level. This result was obtained in a system which circulated 1 molar nitric acid through a thin bed of the spheres. The bed was supported between a glass frit and the anode, with which the bed was in contact. The anode was a spiral of platinum wire; the cathode was a grid of titanium wire. Current density was about 0.2 amp/cm… more

Specifications for Fuel Assemblies for Core I of the Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor

Description: These specifications for the fuel assemblies for Core I of the Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor (EGCR) have been developed for use in procuring the first core loading. A fuel assembly for EGCR consists of a cluster of seven cylindrical fuel elements spaced and supported within a graphite sleeve. Each fuel element consists of a stainless steel tube containing a column of hollow UO2 pellets and having a spacer brazed at the midsection to control the spacing between fuel elements in a cluster. A ma… more

Trimethyllactamide

Description: Technical report. From "3. Methods of Preparation" : "Pivadehyde cyanohydrin can be prepared by the reaction of pivadehyde with anhydrous HCN2 or by the sodium bisulfite process. Trimethyllactamide can be prepared by hydrolysis of pivaldehyde cyanohydrin with cold concentrated sulfuric acid. The procedure described here differs in the scale of preparation an in the use of cold fusing hydrochloric acid for hydrolizing the cyanohydrin."
