Preliminary analysis of NACA measurements of atmospheric turbulence within a thunderstorm - U.S. Weather Bureau thunderstorm project

Description: A general description of the field operations of the U.S. Weather Bureau thunderstorm project conducted in the vicinity of Orlando, Florida during the summer month of 1946 is given. The participation of NACA in this project is described and measurements of atmospheric turbulence taken by NACA are presented for one of the flights. The results indicate that some regions of thunderstorms may present no great hazard to flight, while exceptionally severe conditions of atmospheric turbulence may occur in other regions, or even in the same region, at about the same time. The results also indicate that these severe conditions of turbulence might lead to loss of control with the possible loss of the airplane.

Measurement of knock characteristics in spark-ignition engines

Description: This paper presents a discussion of three potential sources of error in recording engine knocking which are: the natural oscillation of the membrane, the shock process between test contacts, and the danger of burned contacts. Following this discussion, the paper calls attention to various results which make the bouncing-pin indicator appear fundamentally unsuitable for recording knock phenomena.

The friction of piston rings

Description: The coefficient of friction between piston ring and cylinder liner was measured in relation to gliding acceleration, pressure, temperature, quantity of oil and quality of oil. Comparing former lubrication-technical tests, conclusions were drawn as to the state of friction. The coefficients of friction as figured out according to the hydrodynamic theory were compared with those measured by tests. Special tests were made on "oiliness." The highest permissible pressure was measured and the ratio of pressure discussed.

The shock-absorbed system of the airplane landing gear

Description: A discussion is given of the behavior of the shock-absorbing system, consisting of elastic struts and tires, under landing, take-off, and taxying conditions, and a general formula derived for obtaining the minimum stroke required to satisfy the conditions imposed on the landing gear. Finally, the operation of some typical shock-absorbing systems are examined and the necessity brought out for taking into account, in dynamic landing-gear tests, the effect of the wing lift at the instant of contact with the ground.
