Description: This inaugural volume of the CoRSAL Occasional Publications is a collection of traditional and personal texts in Thadou, Saihriem, Hrangkhol, and Ranglong, four languages of the Barak Valley region of Assam, India. Description of belief systems

Description: Houjahen Haokip, a male speaker from Manipur (currently living in Lambung) explains the belief of God and the various spirits. He is 85 at the time of recording. The Thadou believed in the existence of both the supreme God who is in control of everything and the various spirits who inflict sickness when they are instigated by human beings who cannot see the spirits with their naked eyes.

Description of birth ceremonies

Description: Houjahen Haokip, a male speaker from Manipur (currently living in Lambung) explains birth ceremonies in Thadou. He is also a speaker of Manipuri. He is 85 at the time of recording. When a baby is born, friends and relatives visit and give gifts. A priest blesses the child and gives them the name of their grandfather, whichever of their grandfathers lived the longest life.

Description: Bahpu Saihriem is a male speaker residing in Bahbahar village of Cachar district of Assam (originally from Nohsa). He tells about the belief of the Saihriems in the existence of ghosts and spirits. He says that the Saihriems believed in different types of ghosts: some are tall, while other are short, and some ghosts have propping eyes that frighten the people who see it.

Description: Hakthoi Phuoitong, a male speaker from North Cachar Hills in Assam (currently living in Zion Village, Haflong) tells the traditional story Denlikinthang. In this story, Denlikinthang is born to a virgin in the Bomrang village. Denlikinthang becomes the leader of a new village called Khozol. Hakthoi is 64 at the time of recording, and also speaks Bengali.

Description: Hoihte Saihrie, aged 64 is a female speaker from Bahbahar village of Cachar district of Assam. She tells the story of a wicked lady who killed the wife of Sapinthei and later married her father. This wicked lady had a daughter named Mairangkoh. Together, they tortured Sapinthei and managed to kill her after she was marriage to a king.
