KXAS-NBC 5 News Collection
About KXAS/WBAP
The first television news station in Texas, WBAP signed on the air in 1948. In 1974, the station's call letters were changed to KXAS. During its long history, the station pioneered many broadcast techniques in Texas and the Southwest, including the local newscast, professional weather reporting, all-color news film, intercontinental satellite reporting, closed-caption newscasts, and online computer access. About the Physical Collection
UNT Libraries house the complete news archive of NBC 5/KXAS (formerly WBAP), the oldest television news station in Texas. The archive contains historic broadcast footage, scripts, advertisements, still photography, and research files dating from 1950 through 2012. NBC 5/KXAS has partnered with UNT to ensure that this collection of historic news footage is available for students, scholars, and the general public far into the future.
Licensing
UNT Libraries holds the exclusive right to preserve, reformat, permanently store, and present the NBC 5/KXAS collection online. UNT Libraries has also agreed to act as the licensing agent for the broadcast footage. If you plan to use clips from the NBC 5/KXAS collection for purposes other than personal research — including projects that will be shown to the general public or used for commercial gain — you must obtain permission to license the material. You can learn more and find our licensing request form in our FAQ. Any additional questions about licensing footage should be directed to SpecialCollections@unt.edu.
Research
A selection of video clips, news scripts, logbooks, and still photographs has already been digitized. You can find information in these materials by browsing the collection or using the search forms in the UNT Digital Library or The Portal to Texas History.
The rest of the collection remains in analog form. You can use our film and video, news scripts and business files, and photographs finding aids to locate materials of interest. Learn more in our FAQ.
Digitization
Reformatting all the media in the NBC 5/KXAS archive will be a multiyear process. To date, the majority of the footage in the collection is not digitized. If you are interested in viewing materials that have yet to be digitally reformatted, you will be responsible for all costs incurred in digitization following Special Collections' reproduction standards, including shipping and postage. You can learn more and find our reproduction and digitization request form in our FAQ.
About the Digital Collection
Available in both the UNT Digital Library and The Portal to Texas History, the KXAS-NBC 5 News Collection contains more than 200,000 items spanning some ten decades of news coverage. Additional materials will be added as funding becomes available.
Why Some News Clips Are Silent
Many of our earlier news clips do not contain sound. When the clips were originally shown on television, a live narrator reading from a script provided the details about what was happening in the clip. In most cases, we have the script available online as well. You can find the script linked under "Relationships" in the "What" section of the descriptive item record associated with the news clip.
