General Overview of United States Antitrust Law

Description: This Report briefly summarizes (1) the primary United States antitrust statutes, and (2) some of the activities which are generally considered to be violations of those laws. There is also some reference to the prohibition against unfair competition and the “unfairness” jurisdiction of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The laws discussed do not constitute all of the statutes which may be applicable to, or implicated in antitrust issues, but rather, are those which are most often utilized.

Internet Privacy - Protecting Personal Information: Overview and Pending Legislation

Description: The privacy of information collected by operators of World Wide Web sites is a growing issue of concern. Many in Congress and the Clinton Administration prefer to rely on industry self regulation to protect consumer privacy, but frustration at industry's slow pace led to the 1998 passage of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act in 1998 (P.L. 105-277). Tax-Exempt Bond Provisions in the “Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001”

Description: This report describes and analyzes three provisions included in P.L. 107-16. Two of the three provisions will likely induce more tax-exempt bond financing for public school capital investment through loosening arbitrage bond rules for some issuers and expanding the list of otherwise private facilities that are still eligible for tax-exempt financing. The third provision, lower marginal tax rates, will decrease the demand for tax-exempt bonds.
