The Global Peace Operations Initiative: Background and Issues for Congress

Description: This report the background and issues for Congress on the global peace operations initiative. The Bush Administration has requested $95.2 million in FY2008 funds for the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI), a multilateral, five-year program with planned U.S. contributions of some $660 million from FY2005 through FY2009. Its primary purpose is to train and equip 75,000 military troops, a majority of them African, for peacekeeping operations by 2010.

Federal Budget Process Reform: A Brief Overview

Description: Sequestration--the automatic across-the-board cancellation of budgetary resources for the purpose of enforcing budgetary goals--was first established by the 1985 Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act (Title II of P.L. 99-177). Magnetic Fusion: The DOE Fusion Energy Sciences Program

Description: For over 45 years, the United States has been trying to tame the energy source of the hydrogen bomb to produce electricity. Harnessing fusion, the nuclear reaction that powers the sun, requires confining and heating deuterium and tritium nuclei so that they will produce sustained, controlled nuclear energy. One path, called magnetic fusion energy (MFE), is to use very strong magnetic fields to confine a deuterium and tritium plasma while heating it to fusion temperatures.
