Retelling of Juniper Tree of Boyo

Description: A recording of Dawar Muneeb reciting “The Juniper Tree of Boyo,” in the Hunza dialect. This story tells of a Big Juniper Tree before Islam came to the region. Under the tree lived creatures that were a mix of a puppy and a penguin, and they were fed to bring good luck to families. When people would cut the tree, it was thought that the tree would take revenge, either by killing the criminal, or by driving them crazy.

Performance of proverbs of Ustaad Qadir

Description: Recording of Muneem Dawar discussing the proverbs of Ustaad Qadir in the Hunza dialect. Muneeb recalls the stories of Ustaad Qadir and recites some of his proverbs. Ustaad Qadir is sometimes referred to as "Berich Qadiro", although the term "Berich" is perceived to be derogatory by the native speakers. The term has been used to refer to the musicians class, which was stigmatized in the past.
