About the Collection

This collection is comprised primarily of five varieties of Tenyidie [Angami] (ISO: njm) from the Angami tribe in Nagaland, and extends it to its related neighbouring languages of Sopvoma (ISO: nbi) from the Mao tribe, Khuzhale [Khezha] (ISO: nkh) from the Chakhesang tribe, and Nzonkhwen [Sothern Rengma] (ISO: nre) from the Rengma tribe. The varieties of Tenyidie are (i) Jokha Tenyidie from Jakhama village, (ii) Kiwe Tenyidie from Kigwema village, (iii) Zothsü Tenyidie from Jotsoma village, (iv) Khwüno Tenyidie from Khonoma village, and (v) Kewhi Tenyidie from Kohima village. These are all Tibeto-Burman languages spoken in Northeast India in the Nagaland-Manipur national state border.

The collection is a part of the Newton International Fellowship project from the British Academy entitled “Documentation of Complex Tone Systems in Endangered Tribal Languages of Nagaland, Northeast India”.

The collection mainly consists of elicitations of a wordlist compiled by the collector Savio M. Meyase based on the Leipzig-Jakarta list, collected between 2022 and 2024. During the recording sessions, some informants also provided traditional or translated stories, and these have been recorded here as well.
