062906 FERIA DEL LIBRO
Dallas, June 29 - With the idea of creating an incentive and to promote local Hispanic
writers, both public and private enterprises conduct diverse book fairs in Dallas.
These fairs, which count with the participation of renowned authors, stimulate the work
of new writers and attract the attention of the general public.
According to Luis Cobos, there is an interest on the part of editors to get closer to the
community and encourage reading, but to also discover new talents and publish them.
Luis is the proprietor of the bookstore Abrapalabra in Dallas and organizer of the
Hispanic book fair of 2006, which took place a week ago
"There is a myth that Latinos are not fans of reading, however we demonstrate the exact
opposite with our participation and purchasing of material," indicated Cobos. He also
pointed out that the book fair attracted more than 2,000 persons this past year.
The book fair offers everything from self-help books, fictional novels, and even books on
the occult. This is the third time that US publishers, such as Collins and Random House,
who also publish in Spanish, have participated. Foreign publishing houses, such as
Editoriales Diana of Mexico, were also present.
"This year we presented more than 2,800 names that are part of a large list of publishers
that are interested in cultivating reading in the language of Cervantes," explained Cobos.
The third installation of the Hispanic Book Fair had the participation of various authors,
such as the journalist Maria Elena Salinas of the Univision Network.
Which are the bestsellers? The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, children's literature
classics, and the Harry Potter series.
Despite being a small fair, Cobos has faith that each year there will be more opportunities
for new Hispanic authors to be able to launch their writing careers.
For Mexican-American, Catherine Carrasco, the big opportunity for the promotion of two
of her six children's books will be at the First International Book Fair organized by the
Dallas Public Library and various seminars being held in the city from July 14 to the 16.
Carrasco will be able to present her books along with various other Latin American
authors. She will also be able to participate in an information session about how to
publish her works and share her experiences with the public.
"It is an excellent opportunity not only to promote my books, but also to promote
literature in general in a city with as much diversity and growth as Dallas," said Carrasco,
who is originally from El Paso.
