Sean Harper is the coordinator of the Dallas committee of Waves Across the Nation, a proj-
ect of the Campaign to End AIDS that will stage a five-day protest and lobbying effort in
Washington on Oct. 8-12. He is a grassroots activist who has been active with the Texas AIDS
Network, Act Now and the Texas AIDS Advocacy Coalition. He got involved six years ago in
advocacy for more services for HTV patients and for more efforts to fight the epidemic and find
a cure. He works part-time for AIDS Services of Dallas as a client services assistant.
What compelled you to become an advocate?
I’ve Been living with the daily challenges of full-blown AIDS for 15 years. It took me quite a
while to reach total acceptance. Finally, you reach a point where enough is enough. I decided
to become involved because it was important for me to do everything I could so future genera-
tiqnsdo not have to go through what I have.
How can that goal be accomplished?
We must demand from our government a far more urgent and effective response to end the
AIDS epidemic in America and abroad. The attention of our nation’s leaders is focused else-
where at the moment. We’ve seen a shrinking of appropriations for prevention and supportive
What do you believe has led to the loss of a sense of urgency about the epidemic?
Even with 20 years of AIDS in our face, the overall view now of the GLBT community and the
general public is that there is a pill, that there is a cure for AIDS in the form of HTV treatment.
That sense has undermined a lot of the efforts that took place at the beginning of the epidemic.
It’s unfortunate that many people who were involved at the beginning are no longer with us.
Why do you think the younger generation has failed to learn from the past?
For tllfe under-25 crowd, there are two reasons for it. For that generation there is a sense of
immortality, and there is the misconception that there is a fix if you become HIV-positive. Those
two things are killing that generation.
How does Waves Across the Nation plan to help fight the epidemic?
People with HIV will be moving across all 50 states by air, bus, train, car and on foot in a car-
avan. Thousands will converge on Washington for five days of structured action.
