Members of the Austin City Council
have appointed two openly gay
individual to the city’s Human Rights
Commission. Mayor Bruce Todd tapped
STATE
longtime gay activist Rich Bailey as his
appointment, and Councilmember Jackie
Goodman chose Sally McIntosh for her
appointment to die Commission.
Bailey has been active in local, state,
and national politics since 1986, during
which time he has been co-chair of the
Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas and
the Ausdn Lesbian/Gay Political Caucus.
He wais also a founding member and
first president of the Gay,Lesbian, and
Bisexual Veterans of Central Texas.
He currently serves as chair of the
Mayor’s Advisory Council on Lesbian
and Gay Concerns.
McIntosh, although relatively new to
Texas politics, has a long involvement in
lesbian and gay politics in Hawaii,
where she served on the board of the
Gay and Lesbian Community Center,
serving for four years as co-facilitator of

active in Hawaii._
the support group for lesbian, gay, and
bisexual youth. She was also involved
with the ACLU and the Rainbow
Coalition. In Austin, McIntosh has been

and is on the steering committee of the
Ausdn Lesbian/Gay Poliucal Caucus.
The Human Rights Commission acts
as the advisory board to the city council
on non-discrimination policies, aids in
forming local community groups,
investigates complaints of prejudice and
discrimination, and sponsor s
educational programs. T
Former NOW lobbyist joins Human Rights Campaign Fund
Activist Nancy Buermeyer has been
named as a public policy advocate for
the Human Rights Campaign Fund,
HRCF officials announced. Buermeyer
had been the Lesbian Rights Program
director and Government Relations
specialist with the National Organization
for Women’s Washington, D.C. office.
Daniel Zingale, HRCF’s Public Policy
director, cited Buermeyer’s “strong
background working with legislators, as
well as with activists at the grassroots
level.” She “brings to our lobbying staff a
long-time commitment to the issues
facing our community on Capitol Hill,”
he added.
Buermeyer, who holds a masters
degree in marine biology from the
University of Connecticut, had been with
NOW since 1988. While there, she
developed extensive experience in
NATIONAL
lobbying, coalition development, press
relations and grassroots activism, Zingale
said. She coordinated the 1988 National
Lesbian Rights Conference in San Diego,
and assisted in organizing direct actions
and mass demonstrations in favor of
abortion rights.
Buermeyer also coordinated NOW’s
involvment in Karen Thompson’s eight-
year battle to obtain guardianship of her
lover, Sharon Kowalski, who had been
disabled in a car accident. As a lobbyist
for NOW, Buermeyer worked on a wide
range of issues, including violence
against women, abortion rights, lesbian
and gay civil rights and discrimination in
the military.
