New study disputes stereotype of gays as wealthy
Protesters demand action —
Some 40 protesters, representing several Dallas civil rights organizations, gathered on the front steps of the
Crowley Building on Monday, Aug. 15, to demand that the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department take action
against a bailiff overheard making homophobic and derogatory remarks about a lesbian rape victim during the
trial of her attacker. (See story Page 7).

STAFF REPORTER OF DALLAS VOICE
A itew study by a labor economist with the
University of Maryland at College Park indicates that
readership surveys conducted by gay and lesbian
newspapers and media groups drastically misrepresents
the financial status of the community overall.
Gay rights advocates have hailed the study as a
valuable fight in the battle to get approved federal
legislation protecting gays and lesbians from
NATIONAL
employment discrimination, and in local battles around
the country where anti-gay forces are pushing for
initiatives denying discrimination protections to gays

America's morning drive.“So Rich, are
you a pitcher or a catcher?”
The question was not a reference to
the country’s favorite past time. Rather, it
was an inquiry into the sexual
proclivities of a 21-year-old gay man
who is an intern on one of today’s most
successful morning radio shows.
It’s an unlikely pairing of an “out
queer" and an “equal opportunity bigot.”
But — like Martin and Lewis or Abbott
and Costello — it was a match made in
heaven.
Richard James joined the Howard
Stem Show last May as a summer intern.
