Leaders in national gay and lesbian
organizations reacted with skepticism to
comments made last week by Senate
Majority Leader Bob Dole, attacking
films and rap music which depict sex
and violence.
“Bob Dole draws the line different-
ly depending on the audience,” said
Kerry Lobel, deputy director of the
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
“He played the race card today, and
he’ll play the gay card tomorrow.”
The film Priest, starring Linus Roache
(pictured), drew Dole’s ire for its depic-
tions of sexuality among Roman
Catholic Priests.
The presidential candidate declared

The 1995 Dallas City Council inaugu-
ration on Monday was touted as the
beginning of a new era of diversity and
cooperation in municipal government.
But some observers believe a flap which
developed over the selection of a gay
council member as Deputy Mayor Pro
Tem signaled homophobia on the part of
some council members.
Others said the controversy had
nothing to do with the council member’s
sexual orientation
In a brief, largely ceremonial council
meeting on Monday, District 7 council
representative Charlotte Mayes chal-
lenged gay District 2 representative Chris
Luna for the position of Deputy Mayor
Pro Tem, questioning his “morality” and
“integrity.” Luna won the mostly hon-
orary position by a 10-5 vote.

writer of Fluke, who moved to Santa Monica from his native
Italy three years ago. His first film, Flight of the Innocent,

American in its technique. “They think a film, if it deals with
social issues, has to look cheap,” he complains of his country-
