Fiona Loewi plays Audrey, a
model, and the girlfriend of
museum by "Wallace's painting of the
tragic young writer Chatterton. . . .win-
some, young, neoclassical, isolated —
by beauty, death."
Giles buys his first TV and VCR so
he can watch tapes of Ronnie's godaw-
ful movies. In one the young actor is
teased in a locker room by having to
run a gamut of youths with huge, fake
erections in their shorts. He buys teen
magazines, hiding them from his
housekeeper and clipping Ronnie's
photos, mounting them in a scrapbook
he labels "Bostockiana."
The excitement wears Giles down
until his agent orders him to go abroad
for a rest. He knows exactly where to
go: Chesterton, Long Island, the home
of Ronnie Bostock. The magazines have
taught him Ronnie's favorite things —
Stephen King novels, Axl Rose music,
Reeboks and pizza with extra
anchovies — so Giles haunts places the
youth might be or have been.
The trouble is, Ronnie's shooting a
movie in L.A. Desperation being the
father of strategy, Giles chats up
Ronnie's fiance, Audrey (Fiona Loewi).
Pretending to have become aware of
Ronnie through a mythical goddaugh-
ter, he praises him as "a young Olivier."
Audrey swallows it and, impressed
with this famous British writer she's
never heard of, makes sure he meets
Ronnie when he returns. Soon he's
practically a member of the family.
As cool as Giles tries to play it,
Audrey eventually senses that he repre-
sents a threat to her. He baits Ronnie by
saying he's writing a screenplay with a
juicy leading role for a young actor, and
eventually gets up the nerve to try to
reel him in with a package deal.
The plot may be Death in Venice but
Giles is Don Quixote, really convincing
himself that the clueless actor has talent
to match his looks. Hurt is his usual,
sad-faced self — if he were a dog he'd
be a basset hound. He makes Giles'
pain palpable. You'll feel it even if you
