GOP lawmakers force vote against
same-gender marriage in Kentucky
By Mark R. Chellgren
FRANKFORT, Ky. — Political pres-
sure from Republicans forced the
Democratic majority to take a vote in
the House on whether to ban marriage
between people of the same gender and
the vote was overwhelming.
The House voted late Wednesday
night 84-9 to outlaw such marriages
and to refuse to recognize marriages
between people of the same gender that
were performed in any other state. No
state now legalizes such marriages.
"This bill is about what's right for
Kentucky and what the majority of peo-
ple in Kentucky want," said Rep.
Sheldon Baugh, R-Russellville. "That is
that marriage should be defended and
it should be between one man and one
The few critics of the legislation said
it revealed a deeper prejudice and also
questioned whether divorce or remar-
riages by divorced people would be
next to be outlawed or whether single-
parent households can constitute a fam-
Rep. Eleanor Jordan, D-Louisville,
said the arguments against same-gen-
der marriages are the same as used to
rail against interracial marriage.
"It is nothing but inciting hate and
hate-mongering for people who are dif-
ferent from us, the majority," said Rep.
Kathy Stein, D-Lexington.
Democrats were rattled by mounting
Republican pressure and a plan that
could have forced Democrats to choose
either to repudiate their powerful floor
leader, Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg,
or be seen as somehow favoring same-
The immediate response was for
House Democrats to scramble to a
closed caucus meeting, abandoning a
policy of openness they adopted with
some flourish just a year ago.
Previously, Stumbo had blocked the
bill, saying he opposed government
intrusion in such an issue. ▼

Ms. Bono, 29, sought to clarify her
remarks by saying she likes the show.
"The show is not too gay for me,"
she said. "But we have to be realistic.
This is network primetime. When a
show treats gay issues over and over
again, it becomes 'a gay show,' and the
average viewer says, 'Hey, I'm not gay
— I'm not going to watch it.'"
GLAAD executive director Joan M.

Ms. Bono's comments were taken out

believe the program was too gay spe-
cific. The group feels the program tran-
scends issues of sexual orientation,
