Fire damages Oak Lawn house
A three-alarm blaze struck a two-story house
on Wycliff Avenue just after midnight last
Saturday, causing at least $75,000 in dam-
ages. Investigators believe the fire may be
another in a string of 72 deliberately-set fires
that have occurred in Oak Lawn, Old East
Dallas and Highland Park since Aug. 3, caus-
ing more than $1 million in damages.
Salvation Army rescinds benefits
The Salvation Army's commissioners on
Monday overruled a decision by the group's
Western Territory, covering 1 3 states, to begin
offering insurance benefits to gay and straight
unmarried partners of employees. Human
Rights Campaign leader Elizabeth Birch, pic-
tured, said the commissioners' decision would
"disappoint millions of Americans."

good bargains on homes in the Piedmont-
Scyene neighborhood in southeast Dallas.

rolling hills. "It's a secluded pocket that no one
seems to know anything about," said gay resi-
dent Richard Montgomery, pictured, who
bought a home with his roommate in 1998.
