caused long lines and hours
of waiting at the Coliseum with
workers putting in up to 16 hour days
to handle the overflow during fall
1989 registration. The last day of reg-
ular registration a record 23,736 stu-
dents were enrolled at NT, according
to Joneel Harris, registrar. These
numbers indicated a 6.6 percent in-
crease compared to 22,254 at the end
of regular registration the previous
year. Registration officials expected
about 26,500 students at NT, but esti-
mates ranged as high as 28,000. Harris

(CPU) handled an average number of
students in excess of 90 percent each
"We're using the same machine we
used last year, but the workload is
greater," Harris said. "We've had such
an increase in student volume this
year that it's just harder for the system
to process information as quickly ...
Most of the students have been very
understanding and as patient as they
Harris believed several factors con-
tributed to the delays in class sched-
uling and special fees registration this
year. "The delayed response time with
the computer is not the only thing
contributing to the long lines. The
application deadline this year is also

parisons between this and last year."
This year's admission deadline for
fall 1989 was July 17, a full 30 days
earlier than the previous year's dead-
line. Special fees registration was de-
layed because of a greater number of
NT students who received financial
aid. More than 4,500 students re-
ceived financial aid, which represent-
ed a 25 percent increase over last year.
Long before spending hours in the li-
brary studying for class, students prac-
