The University Union's annual
Starburst celebration was held April
4 and concluded with a Battle of the
Bands contest. Competing in the con-
test were local bands Active Logic,
The Cartoons, Deadline, QID, and
Rapid Transit. At stake was a $500
first prize and the title of Denton's
favorite band. Event coordinator Su-
san Lyle said that about three hun-
dred people turned out for the com-
petition held in the Union's Silver Ea-
Each band played a 35 minute set
and was judged in the four equal
categories of stage presence, audi-
ence reaction, musicianship and in-
terpretation/originality. The judging
was conducted by a seven-member
panel, which included lead singer of
Brave Combo, Carl Finch and One
o'Clock Lab Band guitarist, Rich
Peckham. The panel chose Rapid
Transit as a winner and, after the
competition, the event ended with a
Vocalist Kevin McCourt (below) and bassist
Jerrett Kinard (right) performed with the
winning band Rapid Transit. Guitarist Dan
Collins (top right) put on a show with Active
