hsare of Gulf Coast Title
eagles twice caught
by gn inches from
goal in 7h-7 tussle
Many die-hard fans still argue that only
the clock and not Midwestern halted the Eagles.
All agree that it was the season's top thriller.
Nevertheless, the Eagles' 7-7 tie with MU's
Tribesmen threw the Gulf Coast Conference
title race into a deadlock that saw the two elev-
ens share the title and the first Fouts Trophy.
But the Eagles were pounding at the iMU
door at the end of the first half and again ath
the end of the game, both times less than a
yard from paydirt.
After holding a 7-0 lead with just three
minutes left, it was a hard way to end such an
important ballgame. Ray Renfro's short sweep
for a touchdown put the Eagles ahead early in
the third period.
Bobby Rogers put the Indians back in the
game when he intercepted one of Zeke Martin's
flat passes and raced it back 66 yards for a TD.
With the seconds rapidly ticking away,
Martin took to the air and soon had the Eagles
back in scoring position again. But the Indians
held twice on the 2 and the gun caught them
Late in the second quarter Loyd Lowe
shook loose on a 52-yard dash, worming and
twisting his way down to the MU 4 before he
was hauled down. But the Indians held twice
and the half-time gun went off before the Eagles
could try again.
THESE EARLY ARRIVALS om MU campus received TRIBE PILES UP Renfro short of goal line as final
a hearty welcome from alert Midwesterners seconds tick away on clock
