SLDN planning Repeal
Sept. 20 — the day that repeal of DADT is
finalized at last — will be an "historic day,"
according to Servicemembers Legal Defense
Network Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis.
So SLDN plans to mark the moment with
celebrations across the country.
"We will pay tribute to their [gay and les-
bian servicemembers'] service and sacrifice
as we look forward to this new era of military
service — an era that honors the contribu-
tions of all qualified Americans who wish to
serve," Sarvis said.

SLDN was established in 1993 to work on
repeal of DADT and to offer free, confidential
legal services to those impacted by the dis-
criminatory law. Since it was created, it has
received more than 11,000 calls for assis-
tance to its legal hotline, SLDN officials said.
The organization has warned active-duty
military personnel that, "Despite the certifica-
tion issued July 22, 2011, it is still unsafe for
service members to come out until Sept. 20,
2011, when repeal of 'don't ask, don't tell'
will become final."
