NATIONAL CHAMPION. Once post-season tournament play is complete
and final NCAA statistics verified, Ken Williams will win the national cham-
pionship for rebounding. The left-handed battler, listed at a stretched out
6-7, pulled down 411 rebounds in 28 games for a 14.7 average. He will be
NT's first individual national champion in basketball. Williams owns every
NT rebounding record: 29 in a game, 411 in a season, 1,095 in a career.
TRIUMPHANT TRIO. NT senior front line of Fred Mitchell, Ken Williams,
Melvin Davis combined to average 35.9 points and 25.9 rebounds per game
during their varsity career.
MEAN PACE. NT posted 22-6 record in 1977-78 by finishing with 14
straight wins. NT will carry the nation's longest winning streak into next
season. The 22 wins tie the record for most wins in a season. Original mark
set two years ago in a 22-4 campaign. With a 21-6 mark last year, NT has
reeled off 20-plus wins for three consecutive seasons. The three year record
of 65-16 (winning percentage of .802) is the best among major colleges
NATIONAL RANKING. In addition to Williams' individual rebounding ti
NT will rank among top 20 nationally in rebounding margin. NT beat op-
ponents on the boards an average of 7.6 rebounds per game. The team scor-
ing pace of 84.8 points per game will probably rank in the final top 20.
Ironically, the 84.8 is the lowest scoring rate of Blakeley's three Mean
Green teams. The 22-4 club two years ago averaged 96.0 to rank NU
nationally. Last year's 21-6 team was No. 4 at 91.4.
HOME BOYS. NT was perfect 14-0 in 10,000-seat Super Pit this seasonr
Three-year home record under Blakeley is now 38-2. Thanks to the Blakeky
blitz, the NT mark is now up to a respectable 53-14 record (79.1 per center
after five seasons in the Coliseum.
