I would like to express my thanks to all the people involved in this thesis.
Thank you to my parents, for creating an environment that allowed me to dream big and
for teaching me never to settle for less than my best. Thank you to my advisor, Dr.
Shahla Ala'l-Rosales, who has not only been a valuable mentor in my educational
pursuits, but has taken a special role in shaping me to become a better person. I am so
fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from her. Thank you to Dr. Rosales-Ruiz,

to this thesis. I would also like to extend my sincerest gratitude to the families that
