CRIME MEETING -
Civil defense headquarters in Fort Worth is where they
talked about a civilian defense against crime.
Sheriff
Lon Evans and other law enforcement officials in Tar-
rant County are trying to put wings on the idea of a
combined effort against the area's hoodlum element --
after-dark incidents:
a concept borne of two recent
in which a woman was stabbed to death and two men
critically-wounded by gunfire. The lawmen's meeting
is presided over by district attorney Crouch who gave
birth yesterday to the notion of a cooperative effort
against nighttime lawlessness. City Police Chief High-
tower warned against arming irresponsible or ill-trained law-enforcers.
And Crouch says he agrees that
only regular officers should carry guns.
The idea of
a "shotgun brigade", says Crouch, was a newspaper in-
vention.
The DA also wants to use civilian radio
operators and other such groups as what he calls, "the
eyes and ears" of the anti-crime campaign. And he urges1
