RE: Summary of statewide poll results
This memo summarizes key survey findings of a statewide poll conducted by Anzalone
Research, Inc. on behalf of Texas Attorney General Dan Morales. The telephone survey
interviewed 800 likely 1998 general election voters on the evenings of November 7-13,
1997. On review of the data with George Shipley, the Attorney General's general
consultant, the six most important summary findings include:
1. Strong Favorable Image
Dan Morales is in a strong position to be reelected Attorney General of Texas. Nearly
two-thirds of Texas voters (64 percent) have favorable opinions of Morales and almost
seven in ten (69 percent) approve of the job he is doing as Attorney General. Only 22
percent are dissatisfied with his performance. Even a year out, over half the electorate (57
percent) believe they will definitely or probably support Morales in his reelection bid,
compared to just 22 percent who are open to an alternative.
2. Attorney General Far Ahead of GOP Challengers
Morales currently leads Supreme Court Justice John Cornyn by a 57% to 26% margin and
head to head match-ups with all possible opponents give Morales leads of 29 to 34
percentage points. His support never dips below 55 percent and no opponent receives
more than a quarter (26 percent) of the vote. With appropriate resources to wage a solid
statewide campaign, Morales should be successfully reelected.
3. Morales Support is Issue and Image Based
Morales has a strong image fighting crime and protecting consumers. Six in ten voters (60
percent) give him a positive job rating on fighting crime and 62% agree that Morales is a
tough crime fighter. Fifty-two percent give Morales a positive job rating on protecting
consumers and 62% agree that Morales "cares about people like me." One-half(50%)
give Morales a positive job rating on cracking down on deadbeat parents.
4. Strong Character Perceived
The Attorney General is perceived to be running an honest and ethical office (62 percent).
Voters see Morales as moral (59 percent), trustworthy (64 percent) and independent (60
percent). Sixty-two percent of the electorate is more likely to back Morales because he
collected $260 million dollars for the state in delinquent taxes.;" 1
