Professor F Prestifilippo of the Studio
di Ricerche Bibliografiche in Florence,
Italy sends a listing of some twenty Italian
miniature books which he offers for sale.
Anyone interested can write to him at Via
G. Benivieni 11, Firenze, Italy.
We also have a communique from an
Hungarian subscriber who says: "Looking
for a partner to exchange miniature books
edited in Hungary. Contact: Vertes Jen',
Budapest XIII, Visegradi, Utca 23, Hungary."Mr. Jeno is a typesetter who atpresent
teaches in the general subjects of the
printing industry, and goes on to give
some information about the present state
of miniature book publications in Hungary:
Because of the Hungarian printing
industry's heritage of producing books
in pleasing forms, a decidedly serious
interest has been taken in Hungary in
bibliophile editions in the last decade.
Included in this are the editions of
miniature books, where an earnest
competition exists to make them as
pleasing in appearance and as small
as possible.
2Recently, a set of ten books was issued
by "The Friends of the Printing
Arts", edited by Imre Kner, its title:
"The Art of Books". Some of the best
known printers contributed in this
34x44mm. edition. The book is in
Hungarian.
An illustrated edition of a miniature
book, 14xl7mm. to commemorate the
50th anniversary of a printer Journeyman's
activity in the industry is the
best illustration of the genuine interest
taken in the printing arts in Hungary.
Hungary is a small country of Western
culture in Central Europe counting
approximately ten million souls. Its
printing industry is well thought of in
Europe. Some of its printers: Kner,
Tevan and others are appreciated
worldwide.
Its industry has been printing miniature
calendars, grammars and dictionaries
since the 18th century. At present
the "Magyar Helikon" (Hungarian
Helicon) issues miniature books in
38x50 millimeter size on white biblio
paper, bound in silk-linen or leather.
In 1963 Marx's "Communist Manifesto",
lately works of Daphniss and
Khloe and the "Tragedy of Bank Ban"
by Joseph Katona were issued.
The "Manifesto" appeared in 3700
copies, Daphniss and Khloe in 3200
and "Bank Ban" in 5150 copies. The
editions were illustrated with Aristide
Maillol's woodcuts.
