Conclave Eleven is history. And what
a conclave it was, taking place at
the Hyatt Regency Suites Hotel on
Chicago's splendiferous upper Michigan
Avenue, where over 125 registrants
and guests came together to talk,
deliberate, buy and sell miniature
books with one another.
Conclave host Donn Sanford organized
and managed an efficient, interesting
and fun 4 days, September 3-6. Varied
discussion sessions and workshops
were interspersed with receptions
and the usual full day of book selling
and evening auction, followed by the
Annual and Board of Governors Meetings,
which will be reported on more fully
in the next MBS newsletter.

One unusual session was entitled "What's
it Worth." Three prominent American
book dealers who specialize in miniature
books explored the issue of determining
book values. In a clever exercise,
Donn Sanford sent around in advance
7 miniature books from his collection
to the 3 participants in turn. Each
dealer was instructed to inspect the
books, mark down on a cardboard card
what he or she would value the book
for public resale, make notes on how
they came to their conclusion, and
then ship the books off to the next
dealer without any comment or
subsequent discussion with the other

Glen Dawson, Anne Bromer and Jim
Lorson came to the session well
prepared, held up their cards with
value marked thereon, in sequence,
as each of the 7 books was discussed.
It is necessary to keep in mind that
the cost of the book was not a factor

No, this is not a book! This is a very large cake, in the shape of three books! -
