JULIA WIGHTMAN UPDATE
We last reported on Julia Wightman
and her bequest to the Morgan Library
in MBN 95 (1997).
Julia Wightman was a prodigious and
discriminating collector of many things,
including miniature books, who died
in 1994 in New York where she lived.
Mr. Bidwell indicated that one of his
prime responsibilities was organizing,
cataloguing, studying and in due course
presenting to the public material from
the Wightman bequest.
On the approximately 20,000 books
which Wightman bequeathed, Bidwell
indicated these are divided into at
least four main categories: Bindings
(mostly early), Graphic Arts, Miniature
Books, and Children's Books.
For example, included is a huge
collection of books on bookbinding,
19th century manuals on bookbinding,
papermaking, etc. (great as reference
sources for further study).
A spinster with no close heirs, she
gave her vast collection of some 20,000
books to the Morgan Library.
We recently re-visited the Morgan
for an update, and spoke at length
with John Bidwell, appointed about
1 year ago to the position of Asto
Curator of Printed Books and Bindings
Mr. Bidwell was graciously forthcoming
about aspects of Miss Wightman tha
