GOODY TWO SHOES
One of the very first books of original
English fiction to be written directly for
children is A History of Little Goody Two
Shoes. It was published in 1765 in London
by the famous children's book publisher
John Newbery, and immediately became
immensely popular.
Goody went through many editions both
in English and American over 150 years or
so, was widely copied and many different
variations and take-offs appeared, but
is hardly ever heard of today because its
moralizing, virtue-is-its-own-reward, tale
is simply not "with it," as the current
vernacular puts it.
Goody's authorship is a puzzle, but it
is generally ascribed to Oliver Goldsmith,
who wrote The Vicar of Wakefield (1766),
She Stoops to Conquer (1773), and others. In the story of Goody Two Shoes, a
poor child by the name of Goody Two
Shoes is so delighted at possessing an
entire pair of shoes that she cannot resist
telling everyone she meets that she has
"two shoes," whence her name. She grows
up, acquires learning, and eventually becomes
wealthy. The original title page
tells the purpose:
"The History of Little Goody Two Shoes
Otherwise Called
Mrs. Margery Two Shoes.
With the means by which she acquired her
Learning and Wisdom, and in consequence
thereof her Estate; set forth
at large for the Benefit of those,
Who from a State of Rags and Care,
And having Shoes but half a Pair;
Their Fortune and their Fame would fix,
And gallop in a Coach and Six.Title page and Frontispiece of the second edition of GOODY TWO-SHOES, 1766.
